What’s good for washing all the yucky grime out of plastic corner litter boxes?

          my post just vanished… grrr.

anyways, i had posted that i use white vinegar but it never makes it 100% clean for me.  i have to scrub really hard at it.  does anyone have a better idea of a product that is safe to use?

no i would have said white vinegar to but if you soak it for a long time in boiling water and then use something like a paint scrapper it should come off with some elbow grease!

boil the litterbox?  i don’t have a pan that big… lol.  or boil water and then pour it into the box and let soak?  i guess that would make more sense.  i’ll try that.

I hate to say it, but about twice a year, I just buy a new one. I figure the $15 is a good price not to hassle with trying to scrub that dang thing clean.

another thing i was thinking that could work but the box would have to be completely thoroughly washed afterwards and i’m still not sure if it would be safe, is CLR or the Limeaway stuff for bathtubs.  it works wonders on the build-up in the tub but i know it’s not non-toxic…

I agree with marksudark – after awhile it’s best to just get a new litterpan.

It’s weird though some of my rabbits pans get dirtier than others over time – I think some of the new litterpans may be better material too – the “metallic” looking ones seem not to get that gunk into the corner.

I just buy litterboxes wherever I see them on sale. I have a “stash” of them in my garage. I have small as well as large ones.

When they get really gross I usually just chuck em too but they’ve been getting yucky fast lately. I think I’ll try the vinegar.

Hot water, dish detergent, white vinegar and steel wool works for me.  The steel wool does scratch the plastic though, and you get a box with different colored corners after a while.  Letting it soak for a while first makes it easier.

Well the only good thing about Edson peeing a lot is I don’t have problems with yucky boxes because I have to change it daily!  The wood pellets really do a great job of soaking up the pee but the way.  I clean mine daily with vinegar and water.

I forgot to mention that they also get “chewed” on and eventually you have to get rid of it. One of my boxes actually had little holes on the edges. Stella and Luna aren’t chewers, but Kahlua is.

well i would have soaked it in my sink (as i have a large one) or bath if you dont and regularly top up with hot water for say an hour or so, not in a cooking pot lol

This is something that concerns me about Pip, she is a BIGTIME chewer and has gnawed the sides of both her litterpan and her hay manger (a corner litterpan) to the point that I am worried she is ingesting a lot of plastic. Anybody have any ideas on how to bring this habit to a screeching halt? We furnish her daily with tons of hay and willow sticks to chew on, but this doesn’t seem to deter the box munching.

I had a german shepherd that chewed and ate the kids’ little plastic toys when she found them. She eventually died from some kind of digestive problem that led to a possible tumor that apparently ‘burst’ in her gut and we had to have her put to sleep. I want to avoid anything like that happening with the buns.

And I also clean the box several times a day with either water and vinegar, once weekly with soap and hot water and occasionally I spritz a little Simple Green in and thoroughly wash it out and the gunk doesn’t have a chance to build up. I will have to get new litterpans for Pip however, only because she chews hers to pieces.

Vinegar is great for cleaning.  I usually try to let it soak for a couple of minutes before scrubbing with a brush.  We have saltwater fish tanks- and vinegar is used in cleaning alot for those- so we usually buy vinegar by the gallon.)

I also like to using baking soda- add a little water and it makes a slightly abrasive paste that is good for scrubbing.

This is all that I really use to clean anything in her pen or cage (other than dishes)- and I feel good knowing there are no fumes to make her sick or residues that can make her ill.

(Her dishes get washed with dish soap and hot water or get run thru the dishwasher)

I spray mine with vinegar water about every other time I change them. Every few months I give them a serious scrubbing and replace them maybe once a year when they get too icky.
