oooh.  ouch.  poor bun!  i would make an appt for the vet for this afternoon.  she may seem okay now, but these things only seem to become a problem over the weekend when you’re only option is a more expensive emergency vet.  i’d definitely take her today.

Yes take her to the vet!  You do not want that to become infected.  It’s better to nip things in the bud especially with the weekend coming!  Good luck.

Ouchies! Yup the vet is the best idea, especially if you can’t get near it…In the mean time, I would try to spritz some peroxide on it…Does anyone else think that’s a good idea? (I’m a big fan of peroxide)

awe what a rough accident poorlittle girl. yes keep us updated. there was a baby bun beautiful little girl at pet store if I had the $ I would have bought her had her nail torn out too. someone bought her she went fast. I hope they took her to the vet too. yes glad you are such a caring bun mommy so is your little girl it must hurt.she will be glad you took care of her so quickly

I assume that it was not bleeding everywhere, however it sounds like she is in pain. If you could, daub some triple antibiotic ointment (without pain killer) on it and keep an eye on her. The peroxide would need to be diluted if you used it. I know it is very startling when it happens and she should be O.K. If anything worsens, then take her to the vet. However, since you have already scheduled an appointment, keep us updated and let us know what they say.

Poor little Baby.  At least she has a good mom to look after her.  Glad you took her to the vet!  At least you have a piece of mind now.

I’m glad you were able to get her in, especially since she was having eye problems again. Just keep an eye on her toe, should be fine, but you want to be on top of it so as to notice if an infection settles in.

Regarding the eye stuff – Rucy has constant eye drainage due to jaw abscess surgeries that caused scar tissue which causes tear duct blockage. If it wasn’t for my other bunny, Jack, who cleans her eyes daily, I would have to take a warm compress and wipe her drippy eyes dailly.

If her eye irritation keeps happening, have your vet check her teeth. Sometimes ongoing eye problems can also be sign of discomfort due to teeth issues. (even if it is just one eye).  Hopefully you vet checked that anyway…just in case.   Most rabbit savvy vets would.

Some bunnies have clogged eye ducts and what can happen is the extra tears cause irritation around the eye, which can cause loss of fur and discomfort. So if she is still teary eyed be sure to wipe the area around her eyes with a soft moist cloth to help rid the area of the irritating salty tear liquid.

Also, if she continues to have this, she may need to be on antibiotics, like Baytril. Did she have any nose discharge too?

Bunnymama, I am glad you took her in for the eye. I am sorry to hear about that. Sometimes rabbits when they are afraid will go to mush on a vet and yet will tussel with you. It’s not necessarily because the vet has a magic touch. Best to you and glad you enjoy our site!

So glad to hear it was a broken nail, not pulled out.

Spockie had an occasionally blocked tear duct his whole life. The vets gave me an ointment in a tube, ( One kind was called Vetropolycin HC), which I squeezed out two drops into the corner of his eye about twice a day as needed. It would turn to liquid from there as it warmed up with his body heat and get to the right place even if he wiped at it. It was great stuff, and worked to clear up the excess tearing in about 2 days or less. He only needed it every several months or much longer.

P.S. He was diagnosed and this ointment was perscribed in 2003. The vet turned out the lights, and looked into his eyes with this rectangular instrument that had a blue light. Very cool. Has anyone else seen a vet use this? She was able to see well into his eye area. Not sure what the blue light showed, but her diagnosis was spot on.

i have never heard of a bunyn with a blocked tear duct.. you learn something new everyday huh? hows ur bun doing now? all back to its perky self i suspect

rabbitpam, a vet did the same thing for Daffodil because we were trying to narrow down her weepy eye to allergies or blocked tear duct. She also put some dye in her eye to check for a scratch. Not sure what that tool is called though, but it is cool.

I’m really glad you got her in and it sounds like she is on the mend, guess it was a good thing that he was able to look at her eye again too.

I assume that bunny eye sensitivity is why rabbits are used in “Draize eye irritancy tests.”  So sad!

My cat totally pulled out 2 of his claws.  It took months for his paws to be normal.  It turned out that they wouldn’t grow in normally b/c he had some kinda of skin condition (can’t remember what it was—I’m sure I’ll remember when I sign off).  It was caused by a autoimmune response.  It was very difficult to treat and seemed so painful for him.  His claws have since grown back and we haven’t had this problem. 

I fostered a kitten that had suffered such severe eye herpes, that he tear ducts had to be surgically closed.  It was the only way to protect her sight and keep the infections from being chronic.
