I got a new door mat at world market and I was thinking that it would be good for the bunnies for digging but I wanted to make sure you guys thought it was safe first. It is made from 100% coconut fiber and my boys have never really been chewers anyway so I don’t think they would eat it. . . . Here are a few pictures of it.

Sorry I had to put the links, I forgot that for some reason my internet explorer won’t let me open up the thing to add pictures. I should have got on with firefox. . . .

And since I can never resist sharing pictures of my boys, here’s one of Acorn chowing down out of his very appropriate, kitty bowl, because I swear sometimes he thinks he is just another kitty!

Is the rug seisel or coconut fiber? It looks to be OK although I am not sure about the ink used for the koi fish. It is very pretty though. Cute pics of Acorn!

The whole thing is coconut fiber. I was worried about the ink too and this was actually the one with the least amount of ink used. . . . I think the tag said something about the kind of ink used, let me see if I can find it.

Isn’t you Angoragirl that had the rabbit dumped on your property?  And your neighbor took him in?  I’m sorry but I am forgetting exactly who it was.  I’m dying to know what has happened with the bunny!

The flesh of the coconut I know is not O.K. for a rabbit. I *think* that the fiber is O.K. but I need to look around a bit to be sure.

O.K. I’ve looked everywhere and cannot find anything about coconut fiber (coir) and rabbits ingesting it.  I’ve seen it as bedding for hermit crabs and burrowing creatures but that doesn’t necessarily mean it is rabbit-safe.  I would welcome any input anyone has.

Yeah it is, sorry I hadn’t updated you guys on him, I don’t think I’ve really even updated you guys on my boys lately. I have been pretty busy with looking for a house and stuff I guess. He is with my neighbor, she ended up naming him Houdini. She is actually moving to another house after this month so I need to go get pictures for you guys before they move. They are staying close to so she knows I will be around if she needs help. He is doing really well and has run of his own room all day and gets to play in most of the house when she is home.

Yeah, this is a first for me too – don’t know about coconut fiber. I’ll check around.

UPDATE: Okay, after searching and searching, I have yet to find much about coir mats. I did find a find a couple of tidbits, that the coir should be undtreated AND those kind of grass mats can be subject to mold and mildew. But as far as a bunny digesting the fibers, I have yet to find something negative.

Thanks for doing some digging for me. I think I will leave the mat where the bunnies can get to it. It is in an area they are never in without me though so I can watch for them to chew on it.

My bunny Dustor loves his coconut fibers mat and so did Buddie, before him. They occasionally try to pull a fiber out with their teeth but it’s tough, very durable and both of them use it more for resting.  It was sold especially for rabbits as safe resting pads. If the ink on your mat is safe, the coconut fibers should be. I think bunnybytes.com has more. Sorry for the delayed response but I only just now saw your thread.
