Ok so I got a call from a friend of mine that was wanting to get rid of her rabbit. She didn’t have time to take care of him and is going through a horrible divorce. Anyway she told me that if she can’t find a home for him she was going to dump him at local shelter. Well of course knowing me I couldn’t let her do that. So now I am the new owner of a 8 month old blue otter polish buck. He isn’t fixed so I my next paycheck I am sending him and Bambi to the vet to get fixed. Can’t have any babies now. My 9 year old niece came over today and saw him and since I didn’t come up with a name for him yet she calls him Cocoa.. Even though he is blue and not brown haha. Anyway so I got a few pics of “Cocoa” in his cage. He is a cute little bugger but has already bitten me twice. He is going to have to learn some manners. Sorry the pics are so darn blurry. I hate my camera phone but its the only way to get pictures instantly.

              Thanks!
He has already taken a liking to me. He follows me all over the place. I’m just hoping that when they become fixed that him and Bambi will get along. They have already seen each other as I let Bambi out of her hutch to run around and get some excersize. She sniffed at his cage and he eagerly wanted out. I put her up because he was getting a bit too wild. Hopefully soon they will be able to be properly introduced to each other.

my he is so cute! i am very glad you were able to take him in and give him a good home. i am happy to hear you are planning his neuter appointment too.

i’m not quite sure what kind of wood shavings are on the floor of his house – but pine isn’t bunny safe. aspen shavings are ok though – you might want to switch him over to a litterbox, since shavings or litter on the floor can confuse bunnies about where to go.

They are actually newspaper clippings. I was 100% prepared to take him so I haven’t purchased a litter box for him yet. As soon as both rabbits are fixed I am going to build a pen to keep them in, that is if they get along. If not then I will build separate pens.

KandK- Thanks.. Yeah I guess you could say that “Cocoa” is the new blue hahaha..

SR- I really wanted to name him “Romeo”. To me he looks like a lover. Well he sorta is but he is a bit aggressive and dominant. He has nipped me twice. Thankfully never broken the skin

When does he actually bite you? Is it when you reach into his cage, when you pet him or ??? And then what do you do when he bites? I mean I figure you react, but do you leave him alone or what’s your next move?   It may be that he is territorial and he learned that biting worked with his previous owner.   The aggression should get better once he’s fixed, but you don’t want bad habits to set in, but before I can help you with the nipping, I just need to know what he’s nipping over, and what you do about it so far. (do you know what his previous owner did?)

He will bite me sometimes when he is sitting in my lap for no reason. He will just reach over and bite my hand or my arm. I have just been telling him “No!” when he does that but see I really don’t know what to do because Bambi has NEVER bitten me. She is a little sweet heart and hasn’t bitten anyone since I have had her.

hmmm.  every rabbit is different.  i’m guessing that is his way of telling you, “I am not a LAP BUNNY!”  but then he’s wondering why you’re not getting the message…  i would stop holding him in your lap unless absolutely necessary (for grooming or nail trimming).  he will trust you more if you let him be himself and come to him on his terms.  try the “sitting on floor” thing and see if he’ll let you pet him (with his 4 feet firmly on the ground).  not all rabbits like ebing held in laps (few do actually.)  you’re lucky that your Bambi likes those cuddles, and after awhile you will learn what he likes too.  he may like more cuddles after the surgery, but chances are he never will.  you’ll just have to wait and see.

pinky bun nips me when she wants grooming / head pets.  thats not her first method of request… first she sniffs, then starts diggint, then she’ll nip.  it’s not at all a defensive or mean nip and she too has never broken the skin.  i squeal loudly when she does this which sufficiently startles her.  she’s only beenhere a few weeks but i think she’s catching on & seems to just head butt me when she wants pets now.

like beka said, your bun could be telling you he doesnt like being on your lap OR he could be telling you that he wants more pets… i think you’ll have to carefully watch his posturing to figure if he’smad-nippping or attention-nipping.
