While grooming Mimzy this morning, I noticed two of his whiskers on his left side were splitting on the ends/breaking in the middle. Is this a diet concern or does this happen often? I’m wondering if I should just snip the broken ends off or leave them? Will they grow back okay do you think?

I would just leave them alone. Cutting whiskers is bad on cats because they use them for balance, I think. Not sure on rabbits but I’m sure it’s just nature. I could be wrong…

Hey Mimz!, my Daffodil has this problem and every vet that I have asked about it is not sure why, and they felt that it was genetic and I was assured that it had nothing to do with diet and to definately NOT snip them off.  They will just grow out and bunnies use them to navigate around as they are far-sighted animals and nearly blind close-up. Hope this helps!

As Scarlet Rose noted, an animal that has vibrissae (whiskers) uses these hairs for sensing location via touch and sometimes even via air currents. To the extent possible, they should be left alone, otherwise the animal will have a hard time moving and balancing itself. Our bunnies sometimes have split whiskers too. I believe worn ones do eventually get grow back and/or get replaced.

He does seem to drop whiskers often. They don’t seem to be bothering him any, I was just worried they may hinder new whiskers from growing or might split all the way down, (I used to have long hair that went to my hips, so I dealt with nasty ends quite a bit). I actually have a little ‘collection’ of whiskers from Mimzy…of course that makes me sound quite insane. 0.o
Ah good, I’ll just wait for them to fall off naturally then. I knew they used them to navigate, so I didn’t want to have to take them off.
