My bun Lola was having a bad weekend because she was not eating as much as usual. Then I gave her a bath and she felt much better and ate like normal again! I took her to her vet yesterday because I thought she was having problems with her tooth that had to be filed but he had to file two different teeth this time. He told me to watch her appetite and call tomorrow morning.
Well, this morining, i noticed when i got home at around 2 pm, most of her green food was not eaten, which is unusual, she enhales it.Then right now, I was watching her eat and she will take in some food, much on it really weirdly, and then spit it out. She has never done that. She looks very sad because she is trying to eat her favorite food, little nuggets, and she cant. She doesnt swallow it at all. Even her greens, she wont eat them, she just spits it back out and it looks like she doesnt want to. She keeps running around the food and looking for something to eat but when she tries, for some reason she cant chew or it hurts her!? The only thing she didnt spit out was the apple because it is too soft to chew and I just gave her her fav nuggets in a little water so they would soften and she could try to eat it. I dont think she doesnt want to eat, she just cant because something hurts in her mouth.
I am definately going to call the vet tomorrow morning before this continues but is there something I can do tonight?
Can you mush up the vegies and some pellets into liquid form and syringe it into her mouth?
by calling tomorrow morning did you mean saturday morning? you want to call soon b/c they may have missed a spot on the tooth or something.
I would make a pellet slurry and sringe in the side of her mouth and if not drinking get some flavor free pediolyte. Try mashing a banana or stage one baby food like carrots.
I would call the vet ASAP. It sounds like Lola is in pain from the whole ordeal and like was mentioned, something may have been missed. Also syringe feed or offer up a plate of pumpkin or softened pellets because you may not necessarily have to syringe feed anything.
OOHHH thats sad *VIBES for LOLA* Keep us posted on how it goes with the vet *Hug*
Ok, well, she saw the vet today and he said she was probably soar. He gave her a shot of morphine and wants me to give her another tomorrow morining. Im nervous because I feel it could kill her If i do it wrong and I have never given a shot to anyone before. I had a very bad experience with morphene in the past and I feel i wont be able to do it. Has anyone ever given a morphine shot to a bun? Are there some steps i could follow, specifically?
Oh gosh I hope he’d given you directions? Let me see if I can get some of our moderators to help you!!!
He showed me how to do it but i still dont trust myself, if i mess up, i would never forgive myself. He said to pull up the skin right above her hind leg and push the needle in right under the skin until it makes like a pop, then eject the morphine and pull out! How do i know which under the skin he meant, i pulled up some skin but it feels like there are two layers, a thin one and a thicker one.
I feel your pain-I’m terribly squeamish about that stuff and worried for my babies well being…I emailed the other moderators to see if they can hop on and help out. Hopefully they check email tonight….It *is* saturday night though….When would you have to give an injection again? Soon?
He said either tonight (saturday night) or tomorrow morning. So withing the next like 11 hours!
Crud…Ok I’m literally scouring the net for some info!!
Hopefully someone pops on soon!!
Yeah, im looking too. But i keep getting these morphine high people!
sorry i can’t be of any help with info… how are you doing? did the morphine the vet administered help & did your bun start eating? poor thing. hope you’re doing ok. ((((((vibes))))))
Well, after he gave her the morphine, she was cooped up in a corner of her cage all day half asleep. She still wouldnt eat, this time she wasnt willing to try either. This morining I had to force feed her some baby food and she kinda ate it but didnt like it. I did notice that when I was putting one of the measuring cups with pellets near her, she ran over and sniffed, then grabbed the cup and threw it into her water bowl. She is starting to bite my walls again so I think that is a good sign, her teeth dont hurt so much anymore. I still havnt given her the shot, I am really nervous about it and dont think i can do it.
i’m really squeamish & don’t know if i could do it either. i have a hard enough time trying to clip nails or give meds orally. maybe you could take her back to the vet to have it administered? or to an emerg clinic if your vet is closed? i wonder how much they would charge to do that.
I dont know. I called her Vet and he said that there was no way I could mess it up. I just did it and it was kinda like a spur of the moment thing. She took it well but I am still nervous about it.
good for you!!! i hope it does the trick to get her eating again soon.
Sorry it took me a bit (been very busy today), injections are not for the squeamish but think about that it HAS to be done, which it sounds like you just did. You pinch the skin and gently slide the needle in (don’t worry they cannot feel it) and inject. Did you hear the pop? How is the patient doing now?
I am very glad you called your vet, and they are right, it is very, very hard to mess it up (but if you haven’t done it before it is nerve wracking), be sure however that the needle doesn’t go through the other side of the layer of skin and out again when you are pinching the skin. I am trying to find some pictures to no avail. I really have to go shopping now for groceries but will continue to look for some.
Good job by the way! Yay you did it!
Yeah, I did exactly what you said scarlet_rose. She is doing a little better, showing signs of wanting to eat again but she is still having a hard time keeping the food in her mouth. The vet wants to see her tomorrow morning and hopefully wants to get x-rays of her teeth and stomache to make sure it isnt hair balls. She took the morphene pretty well and It was kinda easy. I did feel the pop but didnt hear it. She is running around a lot now.
I am still having to feed her baby food so she gets enough food. She still looks a little depressed but she knows what is going on. I have been pretty much dedicating my weekend to her so she is looking a lot better than saturday morning. YAY! I just hope she wont have an even bigger problem tomorrow from the x-rays. If she does, I think we caught it early but I really hope not.
I am sorry I wasn’t here last night to help, but am very glad you were able to give her the injection after talking to the vet. Learning to give injections is scary business, for sure! I am glad she is going in tomorrow to see the vet, and hopefully they will get her feeling much better. She is lucky that you’ve been able to give her such good care! I really hope everything will go ok at the doctor’s tomorrow, please keep us posted.
lygray, do you have an update for us? I hope everything went well!
Yes, she is doing much better. She still wouldnt eat after i gave her the shot on Sunday. I took her in on Monday and the Vet said her teeth probably feel numb. She got another shot. She is doing better but I have just recently had to limit her eating to hay because now she is showing signs of digestive problems. She is running around like crazy. Thank you all for your concern about her. I really appreciate it.
Glad to hear that things are slowly getting better lots of good *healing vibes* being sent her way, I hope her GI upset settles down soon.
Glad to hear she’s feeling a bit better ! *VIBES* Keep us posted!
