i don’t know what to do.  i am so upset and worried right now.

i took Meadow to the vet this afternoon for her nail trim and the nurse weighed her.  she weighed 3.38 pounds… which is a half pound weight loss since 2 months ago (when she was at 3.78 pounds).  she thought the scale might be wrong so she weighed her again, and it was the same.  fortunately the vet was just finishing up something else and she was able to come in and examine her right away.

the vet checked her teeth.  took her temperature b/c she said she felt cold (but it is pretty cold outside) and everything was normal.  she felt her belly and said it felt good.  i told her what Meadow has been eating (2 cups veggies, 1/4 cup pellets, tim. hay).  she can’t figure out what might be wrong.  she wants me to bring her back next month to be weighed again.

i held it together in the office thank goodness, but in the car i started to cry.  i’m really worried.

why would a healthy bunny suddenly lose half a pound?  please… does anyone have any thoughts on what could be wrong?  or what i should ask the vet to test for?

Do they have a weight older than 2 months ago? Maybe they misweighed her the last time.

Other than that, if she’s eating, poopin and has the right noises in her tummy, I dunno

Did you weigh her last time or the vet? your scales could weigh different. I wouldn’t worry like Mark said everything else is ok. Good mottto, only worry when there is something to worry about.

how old is she again?  my vet just told me that buns weight can fluctuate a bit when they’re young (under a year-ish).  i’m sure if your vet examined her & she was dangerously thin she would have wanted to investigate immediately.  i think the fact that she wants you back in a month says that meadow is still a healthy weight & she just wants to monitor that she doesn’t loose more.  ((((((hugs))))))  i worry about my critters a lot too… sorry you had such a scare!

Mmmm. If she’s happy, eating, pooping, drinking then I wouldn’t worry too much right now.  Definitely keep an eye on her though which I know you will do.  I just don’t think you should do unnecessary tests unless something warrants it.  It’s so much stress on the rabbit.  Edson had tons of his tests to figure out why he drinks  so much water and we still really don’t know anything.  I have had to let the “worry” go because he is happy, eating, pooping all normally.  Trust me I know what it’s like to worry about the unknown.  Hang in there and keep an eye on the girl.

I would definitely watch it – it’s hard to know really what could be wrong just based on weight loss. It’s good you keep track of her weight. I think you should just continue to watch it for now and get advice from the vet if there is further significant weight loss.

Try not to worry too much… I always end up over-stressing things like that with my buns and they always turn out fine. I know it’s hard not to worry since we love them so much. I’m sure Meadow wouldn’t want her momma getting grey hairs worrying over her

When Spockie was a teenager, or just coming out of his teens, I thought he had lost some weight and I was worried. He got checked by the vet who said he was on the low end of weight for him, but not to worry. She said he was just “a lean mean bunny machine.” Sure enough, he gained weight eventually over time.

You said (other post?) that she’s doing lots of laps along with eating and pooping normally. Maybe she burning a bit of baby fat off. Did she shed recently? Had she left a large poopy pile in her box just before you left for the vet? Also might not have had much water to drink yet that day. I wouldn’t worry except to watch to see if she steadily loses, or just hovers within the same range, then see what next month brings on the vet’s scale.

I see every question age-related and health related, however has she increased her activity level?  Is she running around more, has more out-time etc?  What lifestyle changes have been made in her life? I wouldn’t worry too much right now.

Now back along the lines of health: How much water is she drinking, is it excessive?  (I’m thinking about the possibility of diabetes) If she is cold, she will burn more calories to stay warmer as well, so that could be it too, as well something is off kilter with her ability to digest and use calories from her food.

I work in a vet office, and our scale has a mind of its own. If the scale isn’t calibrated properly every day, the reading can be inaccurate. We treat mostly dogs, so a few ounces here and there usually doesn’t make a difference. If everything else seems normal, I wouldn’t worry about it.

thank you everyone for your responses.

she is 11 months and she has gained weight at every vet visit.  i was expecting she would continue to gain weight into her second year.  i guess it is possible that she is tapering off.  during the exam, the vet felt her belly and she said she could feel the ribs, but it wasn’t that she was severely underweight for her size.  the average weight for a female mini rex is about 4.5 pounds, so i really thought she’d be a bit bigger.  she has shed recently, but i didn’t think that would cause a big jump like that.  she drinks the normal few ounces of water a day, eats her pellets and devours her veggies.

she is a pretty active bunny.  she has free run of the house during the day, and at night she always has access to the larger area of her enclosure… so maybe she is exercising more at night…?  it just came as such a shock to me because she definitely eats, poops and seems to be a very happy bunny.  Meadow is extremely affectionate towards my husband and myself (Michael she could take or leave…)

your responses have really calmed me.  i’m going to watch her (i do anyways) and just hope she gains a bit of weight back.

what about it being winter… do bunnies ever lose weight over the winter and gain it back in the warmer months?

Hmm, my two don’t really fluctuate with weather. I think it could be possible.

I was thinking she is just a very active bunny with a good metabolism. All the visits were between 2-3 months and that alone could be the reason for the fluctuations. I always feed a variety of greens and I keep the treats varied (with the exception of papaya tablets) and I will confess, there are days when I am such a big sucker for the bunny begging routine that I “may” overdo the treats. That may have a bit to do with it as well.

I can understand the panic…the more I know about bunnies and all that can happen to them, the more paranoid and protective I become. I am terrified that I will miss something. The fact you bring her in for regular nail trims is a good way to keep an objective eye on her.

to be honest my first thought was cancer.  that’s a big weight loss for such a little bun in a short time.  but i’m not gonna stress about it… the vet is not overly concerned.  i’m expecting Meadow to live to be 20 years old… and i won’t accept anything less than 15 years!

I was thinking – would it be a good idea to get a small scale to weigh her weekly?  It might be hard to get an accurate reading if you were to weigh yourself and then weigh you with her. Just an idea.

like Cadbury said, if a scale is off it’s hard to tell, esp. when the bun is only 3 pounds and change.  every little bit counts.  i would  have to get a baby scale (the ones for weighing newborns).  they sell the digital scales at my work, but they’re 75 bucks!  i’d rather take her back to the vet to have them weigh her.

yeah, when they weight so little it takes a well calibrated scale to measure more accurately.

thats an interesting point about exercise & weight in buns that i’ve wondered about before.  baby has gotten so much more excercise since her surgery its like a difference of night & day really.  that has got to play a part in their weight.  i just wonder how quickly an increase in exercise would actually show up in the scale with a 3lb bunny?  meadow is getting more adventurous… i wonder if her large play area has ended up encouraging her to be more active resulting is a weight loss?

thank goodness you’re such a good mom to your son & your bunny… you’re right on top of it beka!

i was thinking about that too…

Meadow has lost 10% of her body weight in two months.  i made her larger enclosure the first week of January… the same week she was weighed at the vet and was 3.78 pounds.

if you are a human (we are… lol!)  and you weigh 150 pounds and exercise everyday for two months and lose 10% of your body weight, that would be 15 pounds.  that’s a large weight loss, but not impossible with the right diet.
