We put Brambles on a hay-only diet for the next 3 weeks as recommended by our vet to try and correct a perceived bacterial imbalance. To make up for not being able to give him any of his favorite veggies or even pellets, I bought two different varieties of hay – Brome Grass and Bermuda Grass. While relatively similar to timothy hay in nutrition (besides brome grass has lower fat and higher fiber), is there any other difference? I’m assuming they taste different, but why is timothy hay the standard and not these other types? Anyways, I’ll let you know how they like it.

I have wondered that too, Lago.  For the most part, my bunnies subsist on Orchard grass hay, with oat hay thrown in as a treat hay.  They get some of the 2nd cut timothy now and again, but almost every book and website about bunnies tells you to use timothy.  Mine really prefer the orchard grass.

I tried an all hay diet to correct Kokanee’s imbalace and she just wouldn’t fill up on it. Both of them thought they were starving and swarmed the front of the cage every morning…*sigh* Where did you get those hays? I’ve looked for more types…

I got them yesterday from Petco. It’s the same Kaytee brand that I buy their timothy hay from.

The Orchard hay I looked at had higher protein than timothy, which is def. not what poor Brambles needs right now!

Kokanee: Brambles, fortunately, has not had that problem, and although he is sad about not being fed with Vicky (and Roger), he soon goes back to happily grazing in his hay basket.

i bought some mixed grasses but now their website is down & i don’t recall what the grasses are.  the buns took a bit to like it but now they’ll eat it up as much as the timothy.

lago i read in another thread that you have a 3rd bun now!  congrats!!  i adopted a 2nd bunny a couple of weeks ago

My buns are now particular to the Binky hays, which is a shame because Pip eats like she’s starving 24/7 and so my 6 hay blend is disappearing too fast. She goes for a checkup tomorrow to make sure we’re not feeding a tapeworm! 0.o
I’ve thought I should frequent my feed store instead of buying from Petco. They never have anything in stock when I go in there. And Pip and Mim have tired of the Kaytee brands.

Doesn’t switching hays cause more digestive upset though? I’m confused.

The bulk of his hay diet remains as timothy hay. I’m giving small quantities of Brome and Bermuda along with it. However, since they’re so similar in nutritional value, I really can’t see his digestive system noticing a huge difference.
