my sweet pinky is officially home & settling in.  yay!  she’s so lovely and is very brave.  she seemed happy in her new digs immediately and was not at all alarmed by the dog sniffing at her thru the wire.  she was actually very curious about him with her big pink ears tuned forward.

baby seemed unaware there was a new addition… either that or she didn’t care at all.  she kept her exact schedule right down to hopping out to the living room shortly before 10pm even though i had company over.  i had pinky out of her enclosure in the living room to meet my friends briefly and. of course, thats when baby trotted in.  neither bun seemed to give a hoot that the other was there.  they seemed to each wander around about their business and baby selected a magazine from under the ottoman to chew.  then, about a minute later the buns ended up nose to nose and still were very calm.  they backed away from each other and then back nose to nose several times nonchalantly and then started circling eachother.  pinky managed to get behind baby and started humping her.  i let this happen thinking they were sorting out dominance and because baby was not seeming distressed, until pinky started nipping baby’s back & then i broke it up.  when i did that they started to get a little more excited and baby jumped into her living room enclosure, so i scooped up pinky & returned her to her enclosure in her room.

all in all i thought the meeting went very well.  but then it dawned on me that i was taking the shelters word that pinky was a girl.  gulp.  i asked if they sex the rabbits when they arrive at the shelter and they told me yes, there vet does verify sex.  i sure hope so.  crap.  now i wish i’d posponed their meeting until after my vet visit.  i wasn’t thinking about that at all & was just excited that they didn’t want to kill eachother on first sight.  are rabbits difficult to sex at 6 months old?  (thats how old pinky was when she was dropped at the shelter)

anyways… here are some cute pics.  notice that she’s flopping in her litter already

ahhh she is so cute!!! he he Bogart seems very curious about his new friend. My little yorkshire terrier get so excited when he sees all of the little baby buns I have here that I think his tail will fall off, he wags it so much!!

I think their first meeting went well….maybe you can have them living together after all. Rabbits are easy to sex at six months providing it’s done so by people who know what they are looking at. Mounting is usually just a dominance issue like you say. I have two bucks together who met as adults and bonded immediately although they still did he mounting routine.

Well, with the dewlap it sure seems like a girl. You would be able at six months to tell if it’s a male most likely. I would have your vet recheck her though just to be safe – give her a thorough check-up since she came from the shelter.

Love the litter box picture – she sure looks happy!

Our youngest girlbunny often tries to hump the other girlbunnies. She knows she shouldn’t do it, all I have to do is raise my voice and say TEGAN! and she stops. But she gives me that look that says “Stupid big old bunny, spoiling my fun, grumblegrumblegrumble”.

i really hope pinky is a girl, i’d hate to get a surprise litter in a month!  she prolly is & i’m just being paranoid.

this morning baby hippity hopped down the hall as usual to wait for her morning greens, right past pinky’s room.  i left pinky’s door open of course and she was in her enclosure.  baby got into her room, paused (think i saw a lightbulb above her head light up), turned and ventured into pinky’s room.  she hopped all around pinkys nic enclosure sniffing it out & meanwhile pinky was trying to catch a peek at baby.  they sniffed at each other through the wires and then baby got back to exploring the room & pinky started noshing on some hay.  after i served pinky her greens baby trotted back to her room to eat hers.  i baby gated pinky’s room so baby & the dog can’t free roam in & out while pinky is adjusting to her new digs.  she seems pretty comfy but i want to restrict her roaming right now with hopes to get her to be litte trained.

this is wierd.  i really didn’t think i’d be considering bonding so soon but last night’s chance encounter has given me hope that they may just get along.  i still can’t believe baby – the bun who tried to dominate my 66lb dog – wasn’t more aggressive.  these creatures are so interesting.

Oh and Pinky’s tail looks so long!  Where’s the puff tail or is that how it looks when they flop?

pinky has a very long tail!  it’s usually lifted up along her back but when she stretches out it points like that.  baby’s tail does too but its shorter

how exciting!  how old can rabbits get pregnant?  i’d think that by now Baby would probably not be fertile, but i could be wrong.  Pinky seems like she’s enjoying herself.  keep us posted.

They sound like they might end up good friends. Now Bogart can be a slippery slide for two bunnies.

Hahaha – I can just imagine two bunnies sliding down Bogart and then climbing back up and making a pee to “claim” him Did the shelter say whether or not Baby was spayed? If they adopt out the bunnies spayed and neutered then at least you know that either way Pinky wouldn’t be able to get Baby pregnant. The dewlap does seem to be a female thing, even if they are spayed, if they have a bit of extra weight on them they may have the dewlap.

I’m so glad the first meeting went well! Bogart is SUCH a sweetheart of a dog I think he deserves extra treats for being such a nice host.

I think there is a joke in this line somewhere.  LOL.  My first reaction was- Aren’t rabbits most well known for….well, you know????

I know hamsters are only fertile for so long- guinea pigs need to br bred before a certain age.  Female gerbils also get infertile with age.

I wonder if it is different with rabbits?  rabbits that have never had a litter?  and rabbits that live in a rabbitry around other breeding rabbits?

Rabbits are bred for different reasons than the other pocket pets listed- and they are treated like livestock in some instances.  Good question- makes me wonder.

My first reaction/ guess was “not as fertile” but now the more I think about it- rabbits seem to have the whole reproduction thing mastered.

No one knocks up, or puts baby in a corner. LOL

I just remembered, don’t forget to put Pinky on BunSpace so we can all add her to our buddy list.
