I came across this while I was surfing the net.  I remember someone was asking about these foam interlocking thingys.  Well, here’s a picture I found.   I’m not sure how sturdy this cage is, but it sure is cute!

Wow! I like the foam interlocking squares. I have them here, I might try doing it myself.

i thought they’d be a great idea too!  i had a thread about it in the diet & care forum (link below if interested).  i wanted something to put on the hardwood floor that wouldn’t slip & would be easy to keep clean.  i think that the only concern is that a bun would try to eat it, which of course would be bad.  i have yet to pick some up, but when i do i’m planning to test baby bun’s reaction & if she tends to want to nibble on them i’ll transfer them to my exercise area.

I would be very cautious about putting them somewhere where the rabbit is all the time like a cage- and has unsupervised access to them.  A few years ago a dog at the vet clinic where I work decided to tear up and eat some of those foam squares- and he needed surgery to get all of the foam obstruction out of his system.  The odd thing was the owners had the foam for over 2 years installed in their kids playroom- and the dog was 6 years old.  So this was nothing new to the dog and this wasn’t puppy antics either.

thats a great point.  you never know when an animal will want to ‘try out’ chewing ona new thing.  my dog certainly has taught me some lessons in this department (eating jay cloths from off of my counter / chewing a matt out of the blue) and i know my bun can some times take weeks to show interest in a new toy.

I would also be cautious about them. I had a workout mat that was made out of a similar material and quickly noticed the edges were getting nibbled if it wasn’t put out of reach

I think that if you use it as a flooring and keep the edges outside of the cage, that will help prevent the bunny from chewing the mat while he/she is inside the cage – when they are outsdie however they might try taking a nip at it… I still find that sea grass mats zip tied to a flooring of cardboard is quite useful, the bunny can chew it all he wants!

I agree with MooBunnay. If you use it as flooring, where the bunny can’t nibble at the ends, it might be okay. In the picture this person has it on the second level. I would be leery of placing them there. Also in this picture, the cage doesn’t look too sturdy. I would connect the cage to a wooden base, drill holes and secure the cage with zip ties.

Both my guinea pigs and rabbits chewed the holy heck out of those foam squares…not safe to use, in my opinion!

…that stinks! They look like they’d be comfy AND easy to clean…unfortunately also appetizing to buns!

I would assume it probably depends on the bunny how much they would chew at them. I have a couple bunnies that are only interested in chewing wood and grass items so I don’t think that they would chew on the foam, however, I also have two bunnies that will chew absolutely ANYTHING (including attempting to chew on metal just to see if they can ) and I think that they would have a hay day with the foam!

Yeah, I’m sure some buns wouldn’t chew it…but mine were like, “Yay, fun!” <_< Little buggers…Squash mum's plans for good flooring…!

Oh – also, the foamy things have ridges all over them for traction, and that’s what the critters grab onto to chew. No matter if it’s the end or not, they just sink their teeth into the soft foam raised bits and go to town…!
