        Hi all

been doing lots of research on bunny meds and first aid, as we had a bad poopy bum episode last week and I want to be prepared for anything now…I came across this and I’m not sure how valid it is…What do you guys think?

Meat Tenderizer – Yes, that’s right! Put 1/4 teaspoon of plain meat tenderizer (found in any grocery store) in your bunnies drinking water every day when he is shedding his coat. The Bromelain (papaya enzyme) in the tenderizer will dissolve the gooey substance that bonds ingested hair safely and quickly. Much more effective than Papaya tablets.

Here’s an excellent article on hairballs – fact or fiction.

meat tenderizers tend to contain salt, sugar (aka dextrose), I have also seen some that contain MSG and calcium.

I guess if you could not get a bunny to eat the papaya tablets you could try adding meat tenderizer to the water- but I would hesitate to add to water as if bunny drinks less that is even worse in the case of hairballs!  I woule try adding crushed papaya tablets without added sugar- only the sugar naturally in papaya to the water.

I don’t agree with the meat tenderizer method. There is just too much other stuff in it that is not good for a bunny.

I don’t think any vet would recommend the meat tenderizer method either.

ok – that’s just weird and not something that sounds like a safe idea for a bunny.
