So, I just recently heard about Papaya tablets.  Again, I am a new bun mom, so don’t think I’ve just been living in a cave or something!   Ok, so, should you give Papaya tablets to your bun?  If so, why?  And how often?  Thanks!

I give Mimzy papaya tabs at least twice a day now (they are a great non-sugary treat) since he’s just been through a molt and I didn’t want him to block up with hair in his gut.
They are good for digestion/passing of hair and food. Papaya contains natural enzymes that help break down the food and fur. Anything that causes stasis (slowing and stopping) of the normal movement of the digestive system is dangerous and can be fatal for bunnies if not attended quickly and preventatively.

I got the suggestion from gravehearted here at BinkyBunny.com. It’s been like night and day for my bun ever since!
Also, my daughter’s bun, a half-lionhead, has eaten the tabs and seems to like them very much. (Good thing too, she is a difficult bun when it comes to grooming.)
I highly recommend them. I may even get some for myself, they smell so good! ^^

I ditto Mimzmum except I have just one correction, the papaya doesn’t break down fur, the enzymes break up the mucous that binds the fur together to make it easier to pass through. : ) I give mine one in the am and one in the pm.

Thanks Scarlet! ^^ I’m sorry I misinterpreted that! I should’ve been more clear.

So Scarlet would you recommend we give our buns these daily?  I know nothing about them.  They are not sugary and considered a treat?

i believe there are sugar-free tablets which are the ones recommended for buns, but i could be wrong.  i have never fed baby bun these… she hasn’t had any tummy troubles to-date so i didn’t think they were critical for her, especially now that her hay consumption is nice & high.  is this true?

the ones BB sells are the ones i have, they’re by Oxbow.    on the side it says they “do not contain added sugar, salt, starch or artificial preservatives.”  i’m guessing they’re a little bit sweet just naturally, but not so much where it’s a big no-no.  i give Meadow 2 a day.  when she was shedding heavily not long ago she was getting three a day.

Hi KnowItons! I would suggest that it be considered as an addition to the diet. I’ve had great success with it helping out my two during heavy shedding (and my first rabbit ^Trixie^), especially if the poos are strung together like pearls. There are theories both for and against it, my theory is if it doesn’t work for you or if you aren’t sure, it doesn’t hurt them either and can just be a tasty treat. I use the Oxbow ones, specifically formulated for rabbits, while it has natural sugar, there is no added sugar. I Hope that makes sense.

OK thanks.  I might as well try them if it can’t hurt.  I’m assuming BB sells them.

Not a problem! : ) Yes BB does sell them, I don’t think any other manufacturer makes them though. In desperation I have bought some from my local health food store. These just happen to be specifically made for rabbits. Do your rabbits have any trouble with ingesting fur? Introduce them slowly though, as it may take your buns some time to adjust, some bunnies love them, others don’t. Try about a 1/2 tablet a day.

No Edson doesn’t shed hardly at all. BUT it would be nice to nip it in the bud if he does. He’ll eat anything so I’m sure he’ll love them. Thanks.

I have read online that Papaya tablets from the healthfood store can be given- it seems like this is mainly outside of US where Oxbow papaya/pineapple tablets are not as easy to find.

You have to look to see that there is no added sugar or artificial sweeteners- if they are made to be chewable for humans they usually have added sweeteners.

Oxbow tablets are simple and limited ingredients-

Ingredients: Papaya powder, pineapple powder, stearic acid (as a tablet-releasing aid), FD&C Yellow #6 (food coloring), and a microcrystalline cellulose binder.
