DJ did not eat any greens this morning when I fed the buns.  DJ lives to eat, I swear he should have been born a dog, so if he does not want to eat, that is a bad sign.  He refused pellets too.  After breakfast, he started doing the weird half sit half flop thing that tells me "My belly hurts".  He was also pooping all over the place, which is weird.  Yikes, I immediately give him a couple of syringes of water, a little Metacam, and search frantically in the house for the Simethicone that I bought.  Can’t find it, head out to the drug store.  I give him the simethicone and put him in a separate pen with every kind of tempting food I can think of: pellets, spring mix, parsely, alfalfa hay and timothy hay.  After the stress of the meds, he drinks a bunch of water (yay!  I think?)  I run into the shower, and when I get out I offer him a little bunny cookie treat.  He eats it!  Now he starts vacuuming the pen, starting with the alfalfa, moving on to the pellets, then the greens, then the hay.  It was almost like he said "Oh yeah, I guess I’m hungry".  I am thinking the combination of the pain relief and the gas relief put him over the hump.  He’s back together with the girls now.  I’ll go home this afternoon to check on him.

That’s fantastic you nipped this in the bud so quickly. I’m writing this down so I know what to do. It’s so great you made time to let us know this because I think it is very useful. Glad DJ is back to normal!

Yay, I’m glad he’s okay. I think you are correct about the metacam and that you are so persistent certainly helps too.

I am making my lists so I have this stuff handy just in case once that happend to Laith and his poo was real small and few so I put his hiney in the air and rubbed his tum for a while he seemed to like that. I put him in his house checked on him a little later and a huge pile of poo and he started acting normal again poor little guy he has a delicate tummy very delicate. I have to be so careful what I give him. his does great with greens but an orange or a raisin too  often it throws him off. with runny cecals. a raisin as in 1 not every day either. I rub him tum from time to time just in case helps him with his gases if he has any. I am very fearful for him since that happened. he is eating good now and I can’t wait for his binky hay to arrive. with his papaya treats.

phew! hope this has all passed by now without re-occurance (had a gigantic deadline thurs /fri & am just getting caught up on my reading).  how is it that you have metacam on hand?  is this something i can get for emergencies or is it because of your rescue work & your relationship with you vet?  (ie: your vet knows you have enough knowledge to use it appropriately)

I have Metacam left over from when Curly Sue had a bout with stasis a few months ago.  I don’t know if a vet will give you a prescription to keep on hand or not.

yeah i kinda doubt it.  not necessary really, since my vet is good so far about fitting me in when needed anyways.  i was just curious since i’m putting together an emergency kit.  btw… love the name curly sue.  so cute.

You have to be careful with metacam that you absolutely do not use it past the expiration date though – this drug is an aldehyde which is unstable in solution and when exposed to air according to a pharmacist on another rabbit list I am on.

Thanks for that info, Sarita.  I’ll have to be sure to check the expiration date on the vial that I have.

good to know sarita.  was thinking if i had left overs to hang onto it… altho the only time i’ve gotten metacam so far it was pre-measured in syringes for me so i wouldn’t have any left anyways.  still… good to know!

phew – those not eating episodes sure are scary! I am very relieved he turned himself around so quickly – is he doing ok now?

Sarita – thanks for the warning on the metacam after expiry, I’d never heard that before.
