Hey guys! Just found this place. This is a really neat site.

I have a 1-2 year old dwarf rabbit named Alliya who has been with me for about a year. I feel like I had really just been stumbing around trying to find a good reliable source for clear cut information about how to take care of my sensitive little critter and not found entirely consistent info, up till now. Most of the time I’m worried that I’m somehow failing her for some reason or another. Bunnies are very complicated little animals, it seems.

Anyway, the question I have is regarding her feeding routine.  I feed her fresh hay and a small bowl of pellets once a day and then I give her veggies. I am still trying to figure out what kind of greens she will and will not eat. It seems the kale and spinach don’t go over well but just green leaf lettuce seems to be her favorite. I’m thinking I need to mix it up more than that, but my real question is, how much is too much when it comes to carrots? She seems to really like them and will chow down pretty happily whenever I give her one, which, in my current routine is every 2 to 3 days. I give her a medium whole carrot and she eats it over the course of the day.

In looking at the feeding tips and various FAQ sections, I didn’t see carrots mentioned much. Are they not good to feed regularly? How often should she be getting them?

Well, really carrots should just be a treat as they are high in sugar. A small sliver of carrot is best – I can imagine she is happy to munch on a carrot that size but I wouldn’t recommend it. Or you can give her one of those baby carrots instead but not every day – just as an occasional treat.

Hi and welcome to this site. If you look under Diet under Bunny Info above, you’ll see a complete list of what to feed your bunny. If you scroll down a little further you will see treats that should be only given 3x a week. It shows you the amount of carrots you should give. It’s only a couple slivers.

welcome   i felt the same way you did about finding good advice for rabbit care.  this is such a great place for questions / answers about care & behaviour & such.  glad you found it too!  i’ll also steer you towards binky bunny’s diet page.  it’s a great guide & she has pics with examples of treat sizes and it matches what my vet explained to me.  basically unlimited fresh water & hay, a portioned amount of pellets depending on weight and at least 2 cups of fresh greens daily.  don’t miss the link to binky bunny’s greens list on the diet page… it’s great to give ideas since you want to add in another green or 2.  good luck!

Thanks guys. I will take a look at that page and cut down on the carrots. It’s nice to be able to get a strait answer somewhere.  One other question. I had read on some other pages and in a book about rabbits that brocolli is okay for them. I give her a few florrets every few days and she doesn’t seem to have any trouble with them. Is that something that should be given in small quantities, too?

It’s funny. This whole keeping veggies in the house thing is a strange and foreign concept to me. Produce? That had to be weighed? What is this strange stuff in my fridge?

                LOL

^^^ LOL! I know how you feel! People come over and think we are such healthy eaters…It’s like, “uh, check the freezer for TV dinners, thats what the humans eat!!” LOL

Welcome Suzanne! You’ll love it here!

I feed broccoli from time to time too. Actually mine really liked the bag of “broccoli coleslaw” I bought them once! It had shredded broccoli, cabbage and Raddicchio. A real treat!

Welcome Suzanne! I am a relative newbie here too, we can learn together!
You had a great question there. Even my rabbit savvy vet told me I could give my bun a few too many carrots than BinkyBunny recommends. It only confirms that he has an incontrollable sweet tooth. :/ I hate to do it to him, but he’s got to be about a year old and…well he’s going on a diet!

He enjoys way too many baby carrots as a result of pegging my cute meter. I need to harden my heart for his sake. *nods*
I also feed broccoli because I hope it’s good roughage. Mimzy doesn’t enjoy it as much but it is a good change-up. I also noticed he seemed to have a bit of wind after eating it, so that’s why I don’t give too much too often.

I tried veganism in my twenties when I had a bad reaction to a hamburger. I have since fallen off the veggie wagon, but since bun entered my life (and I am a three year cancer survivor) I find that a bin full of greens is very comforting. In fact, Mimzy has to fight me for them! XD

hi Suzanne, welcome to binky bunny!

I hear ya on the veggies – the people at the supermarket must really wonder why I’m buying 6 dills, 8 parsleys and 3 cilantros. Boy, it seems like we must eat really healthy! I’m glad you’ll be only using carrots are a treat too.

My bunnies are big fans of herbs – so we use a lot of them – basil, dill, flat leaf parsley, watercress, cilantro. Also you can buy big tubs of organic spring mix that’s a popular choice for bunnies. My rabbits also really enjoy carrot tops (you can get the free at some farmer’s markets), chard, dandelion greens, turnip greens and such.

Broc and spinach is ok, but can sometimes cause gas – so many people choose to only give a small amount of those two.

When Jessica was getting chunky…which has happened again, but the vet thinks its really a post-spay issue rather than overfeeding…the vet told me a baby carrot every other day is fine.  I’m such an idiot!  My thought was…Bugs Bunny ate a huge carrot several times a day!  Leo loves brocolli and even that is limited to a floret every other day.  The only thing that I don’t limit are green leafy veggies  My vet told me that I can really make a huge salad of anything green (well w/in limits of course).  I suggest hitting the produce section and going crazy in the leafy section—its amazing all the stuff there.  Plus my bunnies go through phases.  Leo loves routine, but Jessi needs changes.  She gets tired of the same veggies over time.
