I’ve got a question for folks who use a hay rack for their buns.  We’ve been putting hay actually in the litterbox.  This of course has the negative side that we go through a lot of hay.  Our buns use opposite ends of the box, so it all gets pretty nasty and I worry about them not having enough fresh hay to eat.  So I’ve been thinking about going to a hay rack.  I bought one, but while Maggie will eat out of it, Benji seems disinterested or something.  Do buns take naturally to eating from a hay rack?  Will Benjamin eat from the hay rack or is it likely that he’ll play the martyr and starve before he’ll make the change?  What can I do to encourage him to go for the hayrack?  (I also ask because I want to provide them another source of "mental stimulation".)

Well, I use a metal one, and at first my bun seemed to like it. Now it seems like it just gets in his way (he tends to throw it around with his litterbox) and he’ll only nibble out of the top of it…pulling hay pieces from between the bars is apparently too much to ask.

Even so, I think it’s worth doing because it keeps hay clean and off the floor of the cage. I still put hay into corner boxes and bowls, as well as the litter box, just to make sure that Mimzy gets his hay quotient. I do go through a bit of it, but I’m too scared of wool block to care.

Fortunately, during summer we have five acres of timothy hay growing naturally here (former owners had horses), so I just go out an pick it from my pesticide free area. Mimzy much prefers fresh to dried. ^^

Sorry I can’t get the direct link to these hay racks so click on the link above – go to Shop – then click on Rabbit Care, Toys & Supplies and you’ll see the "No-waste" hay racks. They come in a single, double & triple.

All the bunnies at Save A Bunny use these hay racks and they are awesome. They have a wire door that is latched and easily opens to stuff hay in. They are a bit expensive but the are great. I place the litter box right in front of it. The box is against the wall of the cage. I got the double. If you have 2 or 3 buns you can get the double or triple.

Oh and since I got the double hay rack I put the bunny blend hay in one side and the timothy hay in the other.  It’s so cute because Edson goes from side to side and loves to bury his head in there if I haven’t refreshed it enough to get the last morsel.

i think a hay rack is a great idea…but i’ve come to a similar problem that my lullabelle wont eat from the rack. she actually started eating less hay when i put the rack up, so i started putting the hay next to the litterbox instead of using the rack. her litterbox is in her own area so it doesnt really matter if hay gets everywhere, but i just pile it next to the litterbox and she finds it nicer to poop and eat clean hay now. i would try that if you have a diva bun like me.

The hay rack I use is not the typical flimsy v shaped one.  I think those are pretty lame.  It’s a big wooden box with a wire door.  Very substantial and doesn’t tip over.

Must get myself one of those better hay racks. I do find the v-shaped is rather ineffective. I would leave the hay right next to the box, but it just gets everywhere and Mimzy likes his area CLEAN. In fact lately he’s been demanding I clean the litterbox the minute he uses it. A bit annoying, but, oh well…so he’s fastidious. (He got into the habit after his neuter surgery, I would change it constantly so he wouldn’t soil his stitches.)

I have 3:  a plastic attach to the cage, a ball that I refill and hang over one of the litterboxes, and my new binky willow hay rack.  The new rack is next to the other litterbox.  I didn’t think they really used the refill ball, but Leo loves knocking it around.  I use the hay racks around the litterboxes b/c Leo likes to dig it up and throw it everywhere and then Jessi doesn’t get her hay when pooping.  I LOVE my new binky willow rack.  Its pretty, edible, and holds plenty of bunny blend!

I just made an order to binky for some hay blend, willow sticks and tent, and some papaya tablets…I didn’t see the rack? *goes to look*

For anyone who’s got an Ikea nearby, I use one of these are a hay rack.  It is zip-tied to one of the NIC panels in the condo, over a litter box.  It is called a "BYGEL", and is supposed to be for drying flatware:

The willow hay rack is under the hay section, at the very bottom of the page.  I love it!
