I’m going on vacation in two weeks and I’m leaving a GI Statis Emergency  "What to do" list for my bunny sitter (she has buns but never experienced GI Statis, lucky her). Anyways, I have never used simethicone but heard it is really good for this. I plan on buying some and leaving it here for the week I’m gone in case she needs it.  I have some questions:

        1. Where can you buy this? A drug store? What section usually?

        2. I read on a site the amount you are supposed to give (I have to find that site again) but it did not specify a different amount for different sized bunnies. I have one about 2.5 lbs and one about 4 lbs. How much would you reccommend? Can you cause harm by giving too much?

I give 1 cc, which I think is standard. It should not harm them, since it only provides gas relief. If you’re worried about the smaller bunny, have her give .5 cc. You should also get her a numbered syringe which you can pick up at your vet’s office.

The cheapest places I’ve found it are target or walmart. You should be able to find it in the baby section of any pharmacy. I try to buy store brand since it is less expensive, but I see Little Tummies and other brands in the store.

Simethicone, any idea what they call this in Australia?

Check in a pharmacy either in pediatrics or around the anti-gas areas. Mylanta Gas (not regular Mylanta or Mylanta-X) is basically simethicone with some anti-acid as well. you don’t really want the anti-acid though. Simethicone, I believe, is the name of the actual chemical/ingredient.

Also how often should I give it?

well if your bunny seems to be more comfortable after, one dose might be enough. if not, you can give a second dose – generally you wouldn’t give it more than 2 times a day

I asked this question on the “gas scare” thread but nobody replied.. on the package for the simethecone it says for a baby under 24lbs to give .3mL/cc so how come we give bunnys 1mL/cc if they are under 24lbs?
