My boyfriend and I have 3 bunnies, Cookie our female, and Sandy and Ben our males. Cookie and Sandy have always gotten along, sometimes they have a little "fun" together but apart from that they cuddle together and are littertrained outside of their cages. The newest arrival is Ben, he is also twice as big as the other two. He is littertrained too, but when he’s out that all goes down the drain and he’ll poop and spray in most areas of the living room and around Cookies cage in the kitchen. All bunnies are fixed. We tried introducing Ben and Cookie, but he won’t stop mounting her, we allowed it some at the beginning for dominance sake but he won’t stop. We also tried to introdusce Sandy and Ben, at first Ben only wanted to mount Sandy too, but the second time we tried to have them together Ben tried to bite Sandy. Luckily I moved my hand in the way and only I got bitten. They also eat the baseboards and the couch. Ben is also food territorial, he came from the humane society so we don’t know what he’s been through or how old he is. He will also nip if he wants petting or wants down, I would like to stop that behaviour as well. Sandy has also given up the litterbox when out and poops where Ben has pooped. Will this stop if we can get them to get along? And if so, how can get them to get along I’m worried Sandy could get hurt.

Well all the pooping and spraying is normal for a new bun coming into the area. They want to make it theirs and, of course, your buns want to take it back.

This will die down as the buns become acclimated to one another – especially if they bond.

I am not experienced with bonding three rabbits but I have seen some bonding practices where they put all three together at once in neutral territory. But I believe that introducing them one at a time is the preferred method.

The mounting can continue for quite some time. In fact, I think some have gone on for a year or more. However, it is usually a quick thing just to remind them who is in charge. Unfortunately, sometimes nipping comes into play (or in my case, is always there).  And when trying to establish a bond between two males, that is a chore as they will both want to be the boss.  All you can do is continue to be regular and persistent about bonding as it can take months to attain.

All this pooping!!! Jeez it just cracks me up we put up with this!  Edson I have to say never marks anything!  It’s kinda weird after all of you have these pooping and peeing wars!!! I wonder why he doesn’t?  Maybe it’s the chicken factor.  He does flick up his back feet after he dashes back to his cage for a pee or after a scare!  It’s almost as if he’s trying to flick off something from his feet. What does that mean?

A foot flick usually means that he’s a bit upset with you. It is along the same lines of being given ‘the butt’.  Some people believe that the foot flick is similiar to a human giving the finger.

Oh, and I should note that despite all of the bonding troubles, Maryann has not left one poop outside of her litter box to date.  Even Dono hasn’t placed any bb’s in the living room.

Really? He’s giving me the finger?  Why?  Cuz he got spooked over something? My perfect bunny is giving me the finger??? That is way too funny…

Well it could be because the scare means that you did something he didn’t like. Now that you know what he’s saying, next time check what you did just before in order to earn the finger. I usually get that reaction from Maryann when she gets to roam free. She sits down, looks at me, waits until I’m watching her then she turns, foot flicks and runs into her warren behind the sewing table. I find it hilarious.

Ok I’ll see next time.  The other thing he’ll do sometimes is shake his whole body after the foot flick!  I usually always sit down on the floor when he’s roaming around the room and a lot of times he just hops on my lap and falls asleep.  Other times he’s  very curious about the room. and kind of skulks (is that a word?)around.  I think he’s just a bit unsure of the whole thing and then the DOG will come in and off he goes.
