Yes it’s me again.  This site has been a god send!

Pepper is a black lop rabbit and she therefore has black nails.  I wondered if anyone could provide suggestions on how I can tell how short to cut her nails.  She and I are both getting into a routine of once a week clipping, I pick her up, put her on my lap, cover her with a towel so she doesn’t escape but so that I can still reach her feet on one site, clip the nails on one side and then turn her round and do the other side.  So far so good, but my problem is I don’t think I’m clipping enough and I have no idea where the quick is.  I’ve seen the bunny burrito suggestion and I’m afraid Pepper will definately not go for this, she is too skittish to put on her back.  So how else can I see the quick?  Will it only show up with the torch on the under side?  How long roughly should a nail look?

Check out the Monthly Maintenance under Bunny Info above.  It says to use a flashlight behind the nail if they are dark.  There’s also a link to more info on nails…

if you don’t have a second person to help, you may want to take her to the vet to see if they can help you.  it’s hard to do the flashlight thing and clip at the same time.  clipping a tiny bit every week or two is good.  the important thing is to not try and do too much at once.

Beka’s right.  I just took Edson to the rescue where I got him for a nail clip and anal gland cleaning (YUCK!!!).  For $15 I’d much rather have the pros do it.  I did watch very carefully but I’m a little worried about cutting the quick.  The anal gland cleaning wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought but still….gross!

i’m a little nervous doing it myself b/c Mead has long quicks (loooooong).  it’s more common in rexes.  i’ve done it before obviously, but i prefer to have a second person.  we had a thread about this not long ago… i also find that the short, ten minute drive stresses Meadow just a little bit so it’s very easy at the vet.

Hi Lorna! It’s good to see you again, I’m so glad we’ve been there to help you! Ah, the black nail question. Bonsai has black nails and sometimes it is awkward to hold a flashlight (he has his good days and bad days of staying still) so an alternative is to clip a very thin sliver at a time and when they jerk their foot, that means you are getting close to the quick and that is where you stop. If you are clipping them once a week, that is quite a bit more often than usual. I trim my two once a month. I hope this helps!

Has anyone tried that nail clipping that supposedly “alerts” you to where the quick is so you don’t hit it? I’ve not tried it, and don’t know if it really works or not…
