        hey there everyone!

        just have a few questions…

my little dolce is about 4 months old and ive only had him since christmas.  he very quickly chose one corner to potty in and does every time so i decided to put a litterbox in the corner he goes in thinking great…this will be easy!  thing is, all he wants to do is dig and tear his litterbox apart and move everything around.    what gives?

        also…

when is the little guy going to come out of his cage?  hes so funny…hes comfortable with me and everything…has no problems with being pet or loved on but all he does is walk out onto his door, sniff the area and go back into his cage.  ive even taken the top off to see if that would make a difference but nope, he just stays put.  will he ever come out?

        thanks

Mine is a big chicken too.  I’ve had Edson for almost 3 months and he still won’t come out of the xpen (which is attached to his cage).  He just loves his area I guess.  He often goes into his cage for a nap. Don’t rush it.  He may come out when he is good and ready.  Edson is super affectionate too so it’s not like he doesn’t like us.  I have dreams of Edson zooming around the house like these other bunnies here but I don’t think it’s ever going to happen!  Just be patient – yours is still very young.

Hello dolcebunny – Welcome to BinkyBunny!

It is pretty normal for a bunny to really love their cage area. It may be due to some of their more natural instincts. In the wild, bunnies spend most of their time safe in their burrow, and only come out at dawn and dusk to eat and such, then head back to the burrow. He probably is feeling very safe there in his cage which is why he doesn’t want to come out!

Is this your first house rabbit? If so, there is lots of information on this site that helped me a lot with my first rabbit

              welcome here!

what does your lil guy do if you take him out?  he’s still young and should tolerate being lifted occasionally.  does he run right back to his cage?  do you have other pets he may be smelling?  what kind of flooring do you have?  if it’s real slippy he may be afraid.  for example, my rabbit hates the kitchen b/c it’s very slippery.

well i dont take him out of his cage except to clean it out which i know i probly shouldnt do but he doesnt seem to mind it much and he will just more or less observe what i am doing and play.  he doesnt love being picked up but he doesnt hate it either…something else we need to work on…i guess i will just give it more time and see what happens.  hes a happy bunny so i really dont want to ruin that  i just feel bad because i want him to be able to run around and be free!

but when you take him out to clean, he plays and everything?  maybe he doesn’t realize he can come out on his own.

                    Welcome!!!

You’ve gotten some good adivce! As for digging in the litter box, what type of litter do you use? mine dig it out if it’s wood chips or newspaper (especially shredded paper) so for me these ingredients are good for making a digging box…Now i use a mix of ‘yesterdays new’ pellets and ‘carefreash’ compressed paper covered with hay. No digging!! But oi, i know its annoying when they dig all accross the cage/room , poops everywhere!!

yes – the digging in the box = not so cool…My bunny Juli’s claim to fame is that she can dig a poop and fling it approximately 4.5 feet in one motion

Pepper started tossing her litterbox contents around a few months back whenI was traveling a lot.  Poor bored bunny!  I got a cheap aluminum wire rack that you cool baked goods on, and put it in on top of her litter.  Problem solved.
