So this is my lurvly new bunny, Humphrey! He’s an approximately 2-year-old rescue rabbit, and he’s a BEEEG boy. I think he’s a regular rex rather than a mini like Monty. He had been at a foster home and seems to be in good condition (he is having a vet visit when my vet is available), and is a real big sweetheart, but you may notice he has a very scruffy bum– when the rescuers found the big baby as a stray he had a big sticky mat on his bum and they think he might have been glued! But he’s really sweet and a big flopper and binkier. He’s really trusting for a stray boy! And a very good climber, and very well behaved. So everyone say hello to my giant bunneh Humphrey! He bonks you all with his giant nose.

He’s seriously cute – I love the rexes, they are such wonderful rabbits. Rexes can be prone to be overweight – something about this breed, not sure why, I’m sure there are rabbit people out there that have their ideas about that – so keep that in mind and be careful not to overfeed them. They are also prone to sore hocks so keep their nails trimmed and soft flooring for them.

how wonderful!  he’s gorgeous!  i am so used to the gray and black broken rexes… it’s really neat to see a brown one!  he does seem really big.  let us know how much he weighs after his vet visit.

Firstly, thank you everyone! I’m sure he feels very welcome. In response to Sarita’s comment, the poor boy is a little overweight (notice the sexy male dewlap…), and he actually does have a little pink callus on one of his feet– but he’s in a solid-bottom cage with lots of carefresh, and his out time is all spent on carpet and couches, so he should be okay. The mini-rex boy, Monty, has a callus on one of his feet, too, but with the same environment he hasn’t had any issues. Luckily Humphrey is a bit more forgiving when it comes to poking and prodding, and he lets me see his feet more often (my mom and I think Monty has something a litte wrong with his back legs– he was very weak when we got him (though we didn’t know at the time) and even now that he’s very muscular he rarely stands on his hind feet and when he flops he sticks his legs out to the side instead of behind. He was probably undernourished in his young life, so he might have funny-shaped bones. Poor boy!) because he flops the normal way, so I can monitor his feet pretty easily. (Actually, I can monitor his whole scruffy bum more easily! Poor baby.)

To my knowledge, it doesn’t matter if they stick their legs out to the side or striaght back when they flop. My buns always do the side thing with the flop. I have seen my gf’s mini rex do both.

Thanks, Markus! Glad to know some other buns just do the side flop. However, my suspicions about Monty stem from a number of other things, too. He was a very weak, very underweight pet store rabbit when we got him (he had been there for weeks and weeks, through probably 6 other groups of bunnies) and it took him a long time even to be able to get up on anything. He’s a feisty little number now, but when we got him he didn’t even try to struggle or get away when we held him, and when the lady at the pet store picked him up he screamed at her. o___o I think he was kind of at death’s door, poor little baby. He doesn’t hop the same way as any other bunny I’ve seen, either. But he’s really muscley now, so he’s compensated for any shortcomings he had before. It’s really sad, though, that a stray was in better shape than a rabbit with regular food and water available! Just goes to show how badly most pet stores treat rabbits, though.

Mostly now Monty just hates Humphrey. >__< He's such a jealous bunny.
