my idea of a bad winter storm is way different than yours   the strong wind is a common scary element tho, i’d say.  my dog is always freaked when it’s too windy… or too rainy / thnder / lightening.  what a fraidy dog!  hope your horse doesn’t get spooked.

The weather here in England is appalling!! We have really deep snow. Today I had to take a foster bunny to get neutered and my vets is a 40 minute drive away. I got him there ok, but when I went to pick him up I had problems with my breaks and couldn’t stop my car. I had to swerve into the other lane to avoid hitting the cars in front, then onto a grass verge inbetween carriages because my car wouldn’t slow down then I spun into the middle of a three lane roundabout!! I was petrified and I’m damage my front bumper from hitting a high kerb. I won’t be going out in severe weather again…
and the bunny got home safely because my sister picked him up for me!

I hope you get your horse in too! luckily ours are stabled but the farmer has to tend to them tomorrow for us because I daren’t go out in my car!

Wow! You were lucky it wasn’t more serious, you must be an excellent driver.

It’s ok. I live in No. California too.  Where are you?  It’s raining really hard here BUT it ain’t the east coast!  Unless maybe you are in Tahoe, I think your horse will be ok until tonight. I always feel really sorry for this group of horses on a hill by my town that just take the brunt of the weather.  The rain and wind just pounds on them. There is no barn just some carport looking things!

Mocha… poor horse, I bet she will be waiting at the gate! Our two are always the last two out in the field because we get there so late to bring them in but they are always there waiting. They haven’t been able to go out today because of the snow storms and it’s predicted to be the same tomorrow…

Lisa…. LOL I actually laughed out loud when I read your post! truth be told I’m a really bad driver!!!! I’m always so nervous and I had a car accident in October where my car was actually written off. It wasn’t my fault, some stupid woman pulled out of a junction and went into the side of me. I had my new car for a month when a van nearly drove into me and I ended up having to reverse into a wall to avoid a collision. I thought that was my bad luck over until today! guess i’m just getting used to it?? I drive safely but it’s other people you have to worry about…unless your breaks fail 🙁

There’s no way I’m going in my car again until it is dry outside and I can get my breaks checked, luckily I work from home.

Be glad you don’t live in NB, Canada. We just had 3 huge winter storms in one week! The snow here is so high I can’t see out my windows and my horse can’t go outside right now because the snow is up to her chest! The weather man is saying we won’t get anymore for a few days just extremely cold weather of about -30 C for the next few days!! Glad my buns are indoor guys!!!

Well I don’t know about how your horse will be… but having lived all over the east coast and then for the past 6 yrs in No Cal, I found that bad winter California storms were about the same as a bad thunderstorm or better- the only problem I ever ran into was when I had to get home from work and some of the coastal roads were flooded and other roads were blocked by fallen trees- all of which were cleared up fast and weren’t a problem if you were in your house unlike me. As long as you aren’t at a high elvelation I can’t imagine you’d have to be too worried about snow/ice (although I haven’t been keeping up on CA weather since I moved)! But good luck and I hope your horse weathers it fine until tomorrow!

OK as I sit here listening to this pounding unrelentless rain and unbelievable wind I thought of your horse!  Did you get him in last night??????????

yikes!!!  i’ve heard about the storms out east… thats is a butt-load of snow!  (pardon the expression )  i seriously hope you have a snow blower or you’d be the marathoner of shovelling.

I feel your pain LittlePuffyTail, here in NS we didn’t get hit with as much snow but it’s freakin COLD. Hopefully you’re horses can get out soon!

It is raining cats and dogs here in Palo Alto, and the 60 MPH winds last night managed to rip the covers off of the plastic boxes I keep my hay in and now the hay inside is wet.  Oh well, into the compost it goes.  Luckily the big bags that I store the flakes of hay in are dry in the garage.

The trouble with our “Bad winter storms” is that most Californians don’t know how to handle them. Sure, you can get feet of snow back east but there you have snow plows, salt, winter tires, people who have driven in the snow, etc. Here though, you get a back up drain at an off ramp and you’ll have traffic miles long. The Bay Bridge had to be closed because trucks were tipping over!

I had to brave the weather to get to work today and, having been raised on the East Coast, it wasn’t any big deal. But watching others trying to figure out how to drive in the rain was fun. If you aren’t exposed to the conditions on a regular basis, you don’t know how to handle them.

This is ironic reading this post, as I sit in Edmonton Alberta a city notorious for cold cold winters (40 below is not unheard of at all) and right now it is two degrees (celcius) above zero, and sunny out!

Now that I am on the East Bay, no longer right in San Francisco, it didn’t seem as harsh. I know though that when we were living up on a hill on the top floor of our apartment building in the city, and a nasty storm would come in, the building would sway with the wind a bit. (some architecture thing, my husband says it’s better to flex, than to break) Anyway, even though I know it was okay to do that – it was still very unsettling as I kept thinking it was an earthquake. Here now on lower ground, I can actually enjoy the wind and the rain. (as long as it doesn’t do any damage)

I’m here in Wisconsin but I’m a native of California. My sisters are in Napa and Sonoma so I’ll have to check in with them and see how their "weathering" the storm. I just hope all that precipitation finds its way east in the form of snow for us!  I’m a die hard snowboarder and even though they make snow at all of our hills here, the fresh stuff is the best. Hang in there Californians!

Boy you guys are getting slammed on the West Coast, here in N.C. we are in exceptional drought, that’s as bad as it gets. It’s been really bad here.

We sure did!!  I have been without power for 3 days but we just got it!  My poor little bun did not understand why it was so cold and dark!  It was sooo cold here. I don’t wish this on anyone – being without power for so long.

the winds and rain here were pretty crazy. we did lose power on and off during Friday and there are lots of tree branches everywhere too.
