I have two bunnies, Luna (girl-white) and Nova (boy-black).  They get along wonderfully since they’ve been together since the day I got them at 2 months old. They are now 1 year.  My concern is that Luna is a little piggy.  She eats everything you put in front of her.  Nova will eat his fill and then lose interest.  If I put food down for them, Luna will not hesitate to push Nova out of the way  to get at the food.  He will push back but I think she is stronger (as females are bigger and she definitetely is).  So she usually wins.  He just waits til she is done and then eats whats left.  I have to feed her than feed him while she is distracted, but she eats fast!  She will take food that he is chewing on if its sticking out of his mouth.  He does that too.  I think they get enough to eat.  They get hay, pellets, and kale every day and raisins and apple as treats.  They each get the same amount, but she is always asking for more.  He doesn’t seem to care as much.  I don’t know if its because he eats less or he doesn’t want to fight her for it.  Is this normal for bunnies?  Do male/female pairs usually have this type of relationship?  Does anyone else deal with this and how do you make sure everyone gets enough to eat?

Mine do the same thing, the girl is piggy and the boy gets pushed around when it’s meal time I started scattering their food around, because I read that since bunnies are "foragers" it’s a good idea to make them have to find their food, and this has helped a little. They will often go looking in different directions, but they still will try to pull long pieces out of each other’s mouths. It’s like a less romantic Lady & the Tramp with the plate of spaghetti…

welcome to BinkyBunny starlitaf! what beautiful bunnies! Luna does look considerably bigger than Nova, so he likely doesn’t need as much food.

I have one extra piggy bunny too. He and his girlfriend often steal veggies and treats from each other, I think it’s pretty common among pairs. Also the fact that Nova lets her eat first is a sign that she’s the dominate one on the relationship.

If it starts to become a serious concern you do have the option of separating them at meal time, if you Luna becomes overweight or Nova is looking underweight. This isn’t as likely to happen if you ensure he always has hay for munching and you’re sticking with a healthy bunny diet

Welcome Starlitaf! I agree with gravehearted, my two take turns at being pigs and well I try to get them to eat in separate areas on their own.

I don’t really have anything to add about the sharing food because I have an "only" bunny, but I did want to mention that I noticed you said you feed kale every day. I had heard it is similar to spinach, in that it has those oxalates (or something like that), that can build up to toxic levels so they should only be fed those once a week or so. Can someone else contribute more to this?  I read this on a list of bunny safe fruits/veggies that included feeding instructions, but I can’t remember where I found it.

Well girl bunnies seem to be bigger and in love with food more. Boy bunnies are more laid back about it. Girl and boy bonded pairs do seem to do this more than like boy-boy pair. Girl-girl pair would probably empty your house of food in 3 days!

O.K. DustBunneh, I’m here to chip in! Spinach is high in iron & oxalates which needs to be watched, kale and mustard greens are also high in oxalates and you want to give a break between feeding with it of about a week. The oxalate salts build up over time and cause toxicity problems in your rabbit and they should be avoided altogether if you rabbit is at risk for bladder sludge or has kidney problems. Binky Bunny has a comprehensive list here: https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=144

This is a good write up on the HRS web site: http://www.rabbit.org/journal/3-4/pellets.html

Every girl bun I’ve ever had has been like this! “me first, you last” I’ve also noticed that my girls like sweet things much more than the boys seem to. They always seem to be better fruit eaters as well. Does anyone else notice that?

Luna absolutely loves raisins and dried apples. She practically inhales them. If she had her way, she’d eat the entire package! She tends to chew on paper too. I hope that’s not a sign she’s not getting enough to eat?

You said you feed hay everyday…is it unlimited, available at all times?

I have a hay rack that I keep filled (although its gets empty pretty quickly) and I usually toss some around the cage. They eat most of it and stomp around on the rest of it. I try to keep putting in more whenever they run out.
