So its been about two months since we started the bonding process between Bunny and Noob. For those of you who are unaware…the black rabbit in my profile picture is Noob and the other is Bunny.

Over all its been pretty hectic. There has been alot of chasing, a few vicous moments with fur flying, lots of car rides and taking to neutral territories. We have also been switching the litter boxes and using the ‘body double’ style trick (the stuffed animal swap).

Finally last night, after a car ride (they were not in the same box) we took them to the local petco and put them both inside a cart while we shopped around. No attacking…just kinda looked at each other. They both seemed a little wary of all the smells. Then we rolled over to the rabbit section and placed them on top of the the other rabbit cage.

The petco has a large hex shaped container where they keep 4 rabbits. I have to say that it does not seem a very clean way to keep a rabbit. Its rougly the size of a large dog crate but has very little air flow. They put metal sheets with holes punched through them on the top to keep people from stealing the rabbits or mishandling them. We put our rabbits on top of the metal sheets so they could smell the other rabbits.

After we let them sit up on the container for a few minutes we put them back into the shopping cart and they immediately huddled up together. As we approached the Fish section. Noob was seen licking Bunny’s shoulder and then her head. Bunny licked Noobs head for a short period of time then they both huddled up for the duration of the check out line.

This gives us both (my girlfriend and I) plenty of hope that they will bond eventually. We put them in their respective cages when we got home since we wanted the night to end on a good note. No need to rush into things right?

Any adivce/comments would be greatly appreciated as we move further into the bonding stages.

        Thanks,

        Joe

p.s. – we’ll get photos of them cuddling next time and post.

          Hi Joe,

It sounds like the petco bonding went really well! The shopping cart can work well, since it’s a form of stress bonding and it sounds like it worked really well. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s important to be consistent and keep up with bonding activities, which it sounds like you’ve been doing. Some bonds just take time.

I’m not quite sure about putting them on top of the other bunny’s cages, since I don’t think it will do anything for the bonding process and may stress out the petco bunnies more than they already are. I really get upset at pet stores selling rabbits, we are always lobbying for them to stop.
