I guess Acorn is one of those bunnies that does not like you to clean out his area while he is in it. Well I didn’t realize that before last night. I went downstairs to clean up and I was using my little broom and dustpan to clean up some stray poos when he came charging at it growling!!! I know I have heard that bunnies growl, but I had never actually heard him growl before. He really didn’t like that little broom, he kept attacking it until I shut him out of his area so I that I could finish cleaning,.

LOL – he probably doesn’t know what the broom is. Yep, he does sound particular about his space.

Some bunnies are very possessive or territorial of their house and litterbox! He’s likely to mellow out about it once he’s neutered.

i’ve had to clean out Meadow’s cage with her in it a few times (b/c for what ever reason she couldn’t be let out at that moment…) and she flips out on my too.  i end up having to clean with one hand, and hold her back with the other.  one time she was so bad i had to put her in the carrier for a few mintues.

It was just really surprising to hear a growl coming out of the little guy. He was charging it too, if I didn’t know that it was upsetting him, I probably would have found his actions pretty funny.

Lucy growled when I brought home another bunny to bond with her. She had murder on her mind. LOL.. Lets just say they weren’t exactly the sparks I was looking for… I ended up sending the little guy back to his foster parents because I’m sure she would’ve torn him to pieces (and mind you she tried).

I’ve never hearda rabbit growl! i heard grunts but not “mad grunts”.
now I’m wondering if Roxy is just being territorile or if it just the latex glove, she doesn’t go after my other hand just the one with the glove and she does not stop until it’s gone. She’s completely fine with me cleaning everything else that I don’t need a glove for. Mr.B is just curious, I’ll be wiping the bottom of his cage and he’ll just hop on in drop a couple poops and hop out, like “hey mom you missed a spot, ha ha”.

medusa growls if i (in a startling manner) poke her hind area or poke her with a stick (to get her out from under the bed)

Last night when I went to give Acorn more hay, he lunged at me and actually bit me! I know before he got mad when I swept out his area while he was in it but he has never lunged at me before. When he first came home, I sat in his enclosure every night and he never seemed mad about that. I have to admit, this last week I was really busy so I didn’t get to spend as much one on one time with him downstairs so I brought him up to the bedroom a few times to spend some time with me instead. I really don’t know if that could have something to do with it though. I had noticed that for the last few days he seemed kind of agitated when I came in his space to feed him, but this was the first time he actually bit me.

I just don’t understand, why would he suddenly decide to bite me when I was just trying to feed him? I really need to do something about him lunging at me every time I go down there but I don’t know what I can do. I cannot get bit every time I give him more food though! Beyond only giving him more hay/water/cleaning out the litter boxes when he is out of his space, what can I do?

I have a rabbit that always lunges and bites me too. I admit I really don’t have the time to work with him though so I just deal with it – he came to me as an adult and has always been this way. I usually try to put my hand on his head to try to control him so I can do what I need to do (feed, clean, etc.). I understand clicker training can help as well.

Pepe has been neutered so I know it’s not a matter of neutering.

Jingles another one of my rabbits is a lunger too. I have him housed in an x-pen and I think that helps. He has calmed down though but I sometimes wonder if his lunging is a result of poor eyesight. If I could house Pepe in an x-pen I think that would help as well but it’s not possible for me to do that right now.

I doubt that you will totally ever understand why he reacts the way he does – I know I don’t with Pepe or Jingles.

I think much of this though is food aggression as that is when Pepe and Jingles react aggressively. I think perhaps they didn’t get fed well before I had them.

Maybe trying talking to Acorn too before you start putting food in his cage or cleaning his cage. Speaking gently might calm him down. Also moving slowly too.

I can sympathise with your lunging and biting bunnies … Luey is a prolific biter and lunger and detests me in his x-pen.  I segregate him off and let him have the run of the lounge room when I am in there cleaning but he will sit outside his pen with his back to me waiting for me to come out.

However, sometimes I dont put the other side across, particularly when I am carrying and juggling his water bowl and he will wait by his mat anticipating me to put the bowl.  I know what he is up to … he wants a chunk out of my hand.  Generally, I walk away and go back inside when he is running amuck in the lounge area.

Mmmm and sometimes he waits and as I walk away he charges at my feet and bites my toes!

I have had him since April 2007 and am very wary of his movements still.  I know he had a terrible background with his previous owners … so I give him leeway and consider it not his fault.

But it is annoying and particularly frustrating when he does it out of aggression and I think in some cases to his delight LOL.

I would so love to get another bunny, but I think it will be just too hard for me, particularly the way Luey is.

                                    Dawn xx

                                      Hi Dawn,

You might actually find that adding another bunny will actually curb Luey’s aggresssion. I know of many aggressive rabbits who have calmed down once they have a mate to spend their time with. They become less frustrated.

You should take Luey to a shelter to see if he can fin a suitable partner and i’m pretty sure you would see vast improvements in his behaviour!!

Dawn comes from the same place as I do and we don’t have rabbit shelters here, we don’t have a lot of rabbits either.

People here also don’t know how to really look after them unless people like Dawn and me seek out information, that’s why I am scared to find homes for my babies.

Most people here think rabbits go in hutches outside and don’t wonder through the house.

                                          Oh that’s awful 🙁

I can see why you would want to keep all of your babies, I think I would find it very difficult to give them up if I were in your situation.
In England house rabbits are becoming more common, but no where near as popular as in the States. Most people who find out I have house rabbits and have purpose built building for them think I’m mad, but I don’t like them to be in cages if I can help it. I guess it’s about educating people as much as you can and showing them how great a pet they are.

I think I saw something called the ‘Bunny shed’ in New Zealand on the net??? where they raise angora’s then shear them for the fur and tourists can go and watch. I was appalled seeing how the rabbits are tied down by their legs being stretched out, it looked awful.

I am trying other overseas rabbit forums to see if they have any people on there from Western Australia.  I thought if there are I can ask if any one with a good home wanted a baby rabbit.

                                            I can only try.
