So, my tiny little bunny (for those who don’t know, she’s about as long as a 16oz bottle of water) has suddenly decided she’s a daredevil or a circus performer or something– she’s been leaping up and down the two+ feet from my bed to the floor, and I’m a little worried, because she doesn’t seem to be understanding that heights are dangerous. She’s like a little mountain goat. Now, she seems fine with the 2ish feet, but I’m afraid that one of these days she’s going to jump off something more dangerous, or jump up to something she can’t reach and bash her little head into something. Is it normal for a rabbit to want to climb mountains when they’re this small?

One of my buns is pretty small too and he is a crazy jumper. He doesn’t think anything is too high. Keep a close eye on your tiny bunny though, she’s so adorable.

yep! at least as far as I know. My littlest bunny is a netherland dwarf (approximately 1 lb.) and she can rocket from the floor up to the top of my bed. Her bonded mate Martin who is about twice her size however only uses the stairs. I think the teeny ones are more nimble and more likely to jump around. I think your bun will be OK, they tend to err on the side of conservatism so I don’t think they’d jump too high, what I’d recommend watching out for is boxes, that your bunny might hop into without being able to hop out. Also, not to be gruesome, but do beware of anything you have on the floor such as papers shredders or trash cans, or anything on the first shelves of bookcases that is sharp that they might accidentally land on while leaping around.

Thanks! There really isn’t anything too dangerous in my room (except scissors/glue guns/other crafty things, but all that stuff is either in drawers or the closet) so as long as it’s okay to let her jump where she thinks she can manage, she should be a pretty safe little bun, I guess. I do have to watch her like crazy, though– she jumped up onto the stack of pet stuff in the corner a couple days ago and found my chinchilla’s fig newtons. o___o No cookies for bunnies! (I probably shouldn’t be giving cookies to the chilla, either, but… well, they’re mini, I give them sparingly, and it’s just so damn cute to watch him hold them with his little hands…) Thanks for the advice!

Shadow is the same way. I have to use 2 baby gates stacked in the doorway of his room because he can scale a 3 foot gate and land on the other side. I am horrified when I catch him trying to jump gaps between the sofa and the hutch or chairs. He has no common sense regarding distance. He is trying to figure out how to jump on the radiator cover to get to the window sill, like the cats. I have found him dangling off it a few times. He can’t quite make it.

He has managed to jump into a 3 foot bin I use to store yesterdays news pellets, but he could not get back out. I have to make sure the bathroom door is closed and the lid down cause I know he will end up in the bowl one day.

I miss the good old days of my first bunny who was determined to electrocute herself despite my best efforts to cover every wire. Now I have to worry about a rabbit who is determined to defy gravity.

my two bunnies were climbers when they were babies. one is a girl and one is a boy. i have a cage with platforms. it has ramps but i took them out after i realized they never use them! they also learned to scale the side of the cage to get to the top. i was afraid they’d hurt themselves but they got pretty good at it. they stopped doing it after they got bigger and weighed more. they still jump on my bed and will climb anything they can reach (piles of laundry, boxes, crates). i try to put out rugs or towels so if they do slip off its a soft landing. =)
