I was under the impression that rabbits communicated rather extensively using the movement and positioning of their ears, subtleties of direction and elevation showing different states of emotion, interest, or submission.

How, then, do lops manage without a seemingly integral part of rabbit physiology? Do lops act differently when in social circumstances? Do they communicate in another way?

well here’s my take…. i think its similar but just upside down.  where the ears connect to the head is the hinge and when curious the ears swing forward, normal ears hang straight down, annoyed or angry ears swing back.  the further the more extreme i always think.  then there are ear twist variations.  swung forward with ears twisted forward is a curious ‘huh? i’m interested’, straight down pointing ears with forward twist is ‘what do you want?’ and back swung ears twisted out so you can see the pink underside is ‘yikers!’  my first lop’s ears would point straight up when he was startled.  they looked like exclamation points

Thanks for the code!  I’ve wondered so many times how I can really tell how my lops are feeling, but that makes sense now that you point it out.  Whenever they’re hopping around the house they put their ears really forward and I’ve wondered if that was a sign of happiness.  Wow, there’s always something new to learn about bunnies!
