Lately I’ve noticed Chief likes to lick a few things (just not me!). His blankets, the wooden poles holding his platform up etc

What does this mean? I’ve read that he either really loves the objects or he’s deficient in a nutrient.
Any ideas? Or is it just a bunny thing?

Here he is POSING. He was lying down but when I went in for a closer pic he got up, grabbed a peice of spinach and stood there like that until the camera clicked!

          Heh, muggin’ for the camera…

My bunny likes to lick an antique (aka rusty) smelting crucible I have. I figure that she just needs her iron every once in a while. Other than that, she’s not a big licker.

Both my buns will sit on my bed and lick the sheets and/or pillows. They will totally soak them through if I don’t stop them. It’s weird, I don’t know why they do it! I just know I’m changing my bedding an awful lot!

Hmm, it might be if they don’t have a companion they are impulse grooming and hoping for a groom back.  You can try offering a stuffed animal companion or more human one on one time.  Other times, it can be because the rabbit is thirsty (make sure the water bottle is working and/or the crock is full or they are nervous. Off the top of my head I can’t think of anything else.

Thanks Scarlet. Now I’m sad that I haven’t gotten Chief a companion yet   I don’t want to rush into it. I’m thinking of doing it over christmas when I will be home for a few weeks and see how it goes.

His water gets changed every morning and I see him drinking enough. Poor Chief!

Aaaw, that’s cute. I’m hoping my bunny bonds to me as his companion. He seems like he’s getting more comfortable with me.  We lie on the floor together and do nose to nose sniffing and I pet him, but I haven’t tried to hold him yet and there has been no licking so far. We shall see….Good luck with getting Chief a friend!  I’m sure that will warm your heart to see him snuggling with another bun, all happy and in love!

I just read over on this site today http://www.paperglyphs.com/rabbits/rabbittalk.html that licking nearby objects when you are around can be your bunny telling you he likes you! Kind of like a proxy grooming…

That site is great… I found out about it on another thread here.

Rucy and Bailey do this too but only while I pet them. I have also heard that bunnies will do this as sign of affection because they don’t want to lick your salty non-tasty skin (according to some bunnies) so they will “groom” the nearest thing to you. If your bunny is just licking without being pet or being near you, then I’m not exactly sure either. According to the book “Why Does My Rabbit…”, rabbits spend about 16% of their day grooming, so maybe your bunny is just filling up that 16%.

Meadow licks the couch where Mike sits.  she licks her wood house that Mike built.  i think she’s trying to tell me she’s in love with my husband and that i should "move along".

If you are looking for a nice non-live “companion” for your bunny to groom – I would highly recommend the stuffed bunnies that you can make at the “Build a Bear” workshop. I have had 5 different bunnies that have picked this particular stuffed animal to groom out of a giant pile of different animals AND we’ve had another bunny owner on this site whose bun developed a particular affection for this particular stuffed animal. Plus you can build them…YAY

what a cool idea about the build a bear place!  i’ve never made one of those but ive wanted to… it would be a fun project for MIchael and i… but question… what kind of eyes do they have?  i know with dogs (and babies) you can’t have sewn on plastic eyes b/c they’ll chew ’em off (or choke on them)… it’s the same with bunnies i’m guessing?

And the Build A Bears come with a cool box that makes a perfect hidey/play house for a bun.  With two little girls, I know all about BuildABear….

Hmm – I can’t remember what kind of eyes my build-a-bunny has – I’ll check when I get home tonight.

I’ll see if there’s a build a bear place around here, otherwise there will be a nice teddy waiting for chief at christmas

make sure whatever toy you get for your bunny, that the “fur” of the toy doesn’t come loose easily via grooming, otherwise your bunny will get a mouthful and stomach full of fibers.
