        Hi everyone,

Well Kokanee is sick.  I brought her in to the vet this morning and they said they would see around one thirty…I’m sooo worried. I was going to leave her at home and check her at lunch and see what you guys thought of her symptoms…and then I realized you would all say to take her to the vet I’m sure. So that’s what i did.

Shes been (this is gross, sorry) having some mucousy discharge from her bum-I assumed this was bacteria overgrowth maybe attributed to sugar/starch. Her stomach was gurgling and then last night she started sneezing too….Shes eating and pooping fine…She even wanted out this morning like usual to run around and play…

I’m so worried i think I could throw up, I don’t know if I can wait long!!! I’m so happy I picked out a vet BEFORE, that would have been stressful to do this morning.. sigh

It sounds to me like you did the right thing, getting her to the vet right away so that they can see her and figure out what is wrong.  I am not familiar with the symptoms you describe, so I can’t even venture an arm-chair diagnosis.  Keep us updated.

We’ll be thinking good thoughts for Kokanee! Which vet do you take your bunnies to?

Thanks everyone! I should be hearing any minute now(well sort of, half an hour)

ScooterandAnnette…This is our first bunny vet visit; But I checked out ALL of the rabbit vets in Edmonton and area (sh.park, st albert)..I emailed all vets asking them some 'trick' questions to see if they would answer correctly, and also got some background on their experience and practice…so I am really confident with my choice in vets. I took kokanee to Granada Vet Clinic. It turns out the vet I selected out of over 15 is the vet who sees my parent's dog! She has an excellent bedside manner and is very loving and good and gentle. Even though she was prepping for surgery (they do surgeries in the morning) she came out to speak directly to me about Kokanee, gave her cuddles and asked all the right questions! I would recommnend her!

I hope I am allowed to put my vets name in here? I’m not good at reading rules…Maybe I’ll take a browse through the forum rules again…
                        *fingers crossed*

i just mentioned my vets name too… i *think* it’s okay as long as it’s not a negative (slanderous) comment.  and if some one recommends a vet here every one is still responsible for their own decision.

ooo poor Kokanee! I am waiting to hear what the vet has to say….
Really hope she’s ok!! I think it’s ok to post the vets name, since you’re not saying anything slanderous about her.

Ok I phoned the vet as I was impatient…I guess maybe I wrote down the wrong extension number for me…When she said ‘we’ve had a problem’ my heart jumped in my throat but the sentance was….”problem getting ahold of you’ phew

So Kokanee has an upper repiratory infection, the vet flushed her out and said she might need to be back but to watch how she is. SHe doesn’t want to put her on meds yet as she is sure she will be fine battling it on her own. She said her stomach feels fine, no blockages…my ears are burning I am so flushed with relief from that worry!! Maybe I’m flushed from talking about my rabbit’s poos in terms of color and size in my cubicle where everyone I work with can hear!!
I’m so happy I can take her home tonight!!!

I always feel that a doctor that uses antibiotics for a bunny as a last resort is a good doctor. My first bunny had an infection and over the period of two weeks, they gave her three different antibiotics – which I am sure helped lead to her eventual nap. I am so glad to hear that they feel she’ll do fine.

Now just not to have your heart skip everytime you hear a sneeze.

We called around a whole bunch of vets to find one for our crew. Some of them just plain said no we don’t handle rabbits, one said oh yes of course we do rabbits but when I asked how many they typically have as clients they said they see 4 or 5 a year. Sorry, no. We ended up at Park Veterinary Clinic in Sherwood Park and so far we’ve been really pleased with them. Y’know when we first thought about getting a bunny we didn’t think that it would take so much effort to find a good vet!!

I’m sure it’ll be a relief to have her back home!

K & K, I am very sorry to hear about Kokanee’s ailment but am glad to hear that everything is going to be O.K. but to keep an eye on things.  I would very definately have advised you to take Kokanee to the vet so I’m glad you followed your instinct and found a terrific vet to boot! Yes, you are O.K. mentioning a vet so long as you follow the guidelines regarding it (which you have):

Vet Information & Vet Referrals: Regarding negative experiences with a vet or animal hospital:  For your own legal protection we suggest that you never actually name the vet’s name or group when saying anything negative about them.

It is okay to refer a particular vet when someone asks for it or if it is subject related.

Even if someone posts their vet or facility recommendation to you, it is still your responsibility to screen the vet and the facilities.  BinkyBunny.com and the person that gives you the vet reference is not responsible for what happens in the referred veterinarian’s care. That is between you and the veterinarian.  So always be sure to check out any referred vet for yourself.

Keep us updated on Kokanee, the poor sweetheart!

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone! And thanks for the help Scarlet. ScooterandAnnette I know what you mean, I was REALLY surprised when I started phoning vets and most don’t handle them…You’d be surprised how many vets fast their rabbits for surgery too …Glad you found a good vet as well! I’ve heard good things about that facility as well

I brought Kokanee home yesterday…We cuddled all the way home! She snuggled around my neck all the way and was sooo good! I brought her home and kahlua was sooo excited-I guess she was bored or worried all day. But Kokanee just wanted to sleep-I guess she must have been up all day at the vets and she was practically asleep on her feet. So after they had a bit of a cuddle I took kahlua out to play so kokanee could rest. She’s doing well so far but is still congested…No sneezing so far; The vet said I can take her back for more flushing should she need it. So…hopefully she gets better!  She wanted out to play this morning so, so far so good

                                                      I think it’s 13 below zero in farenheit…
Actually Edmonton routinely hits forty below here, so not so bad! I just broke out my winter jacket yesterday

forty below is the same in farenheit and celcius

                                                      the joke is
                                                      “it’s forty below”
                                                      ‘celcius or farenheit?’
“when its that cold it doesn’t matter!!”
