Hi I am new to this but need help.

I have a rabbit my local vet was needing a home for and as usual I felt sorry for her and took her home.

About a week ago I noticed she was making a nest, I took her back to the vet and they took xrays and said she was not pregnant.

I went out this morning to clean the cage and I noticed she had given birth last night.

Any info on what I need to do will be greatly appreciated

          Oh dear!

I have no personal experience but I found this link…

          http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/surpriselitter.html

The best thing I can is : don’t touch the babies or move them yet! Mom might get stressed and eat them/stop caring for them!

Oh no, that is quite the surprise Lisa.  Binky Bunny has a list under the LINKS tab up above in green for pregnancy/Babies.  I copied and pasted it here for you.  I hope it helps.

                Thanks for the info.

Could you tell me what kind of rabbit she is as I know nothing about them just what I have read?

Im a bit angry at the vet now im the one that has to try to find them a home and in Western Australia that is not easy.

We don’t have much here for rabbits and trying to rehome them will be hard.

I don’t blame you a bit Lisa.  Especially with how people in your country feel about rabbits to begin with (as an introduced species and all, destroying habitat for other native species). Did you let the vet know she just had a litter and are they going to offer any help? Hmm, she looks a lot like my Daffodil, but with no spots all over her main body.  She could be a Rhinelander mix. I do not think that she is one particular breed. How are you coping by the way? How many babies are there?

I rang the Vet this morning and they were shocked as well.

They said they will keep in touch to see how I am going, but I will ask them to help find homes for them.

I also did a goggle search on specialist veterinarians which came up with one close to where I live so I will also ask them for help.

I have noticed 5 babies 3 pink skin and 2 black skin but not sure if there are any more.

I took a movie of them but it is to big to upload so I have take a pic instead.

                      They sure are cute.

Good luck with Mom and babies!! There is absolutely NOTHING in the world cuter than a baby bunny!!!! I think it was very compassionate of you to take in a bunny who needed a home. Hopefully you will find a couple more people like you for the wee ones. Keep us updated, with pics of course

wow Lisa, that was quite a surprise!! I do hope they will be ok. I’m glad the vet at least returned your calls and didn’t knowingly send her home with you pregnant.

goodness… this makes me wonder how reputable this vet is… maybe you should look around for a new vet for your rabbit… how could they have missed that?!  good luck with everything.  please ask questions if you have any…

I have been talking to a few friends of mine and they are all saying the same thing, how good was this vet to miss seeing 6 babies.

Think I might take my business elsewhere with 3 cats 2 dog (1 on heart tablets) I think they might miss me a bit.

I also have a friend who runs a poodle rescue so I will let her know to spread the word around.

I am going to upload a short movie of them for you all to see when I get permission,  they sure are cute.

It’s going to be hard to let them go.

I see how your friends have a point.  I find it rather odd they were not able to tell either.  I am glad to hear you have resources to try and re-home the babies though.  How is the mother doing?

Mum is good I think she’s done this before.
Her nest is perfect the babies are chubby bubbies, so far all looks good.

I just got back from the vet and they said there definitely wasn’t anything on the x-rays, they were very supportive and want to help me find homes for them.
They also said if I need anything just to ring them, I am feeling a bit better about them now.

They told me mum was found next to a busy road so not sure if she could have mated with a wild rabbit, I can’t believe no one was missing her because she sure is friendly.

I get up early in the morning and let her out into the yard but I stay and watch her for about an hour. My husband is on holidays soon and is going to make her an enclosure as my cats don’t like her; he made a great cat enclosure so he will do a good job for our Ebony rabbit.

I have never had a rabbit before but they sure are entertaining and give lots of love, can’t understand how people can get them keep them for a while realise it takes a bit of work so decide to get rid of them its so sad.

That’s great everything is going well with mum and the litter.  I am also glad that you were able to talk to the vet as well and they are going to help out as much as they can. What a very sweet hubby you have that is going to make a nice run for Ebony! Well, you sound like you’re going to be an excellent mum yourself to this beautiful creature that has wormed its fuzzy little way into your heart. Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions or even to just share new experiences of being a bunny slave, oops, I mean, ownership. LOL  I do hope that your cats can come to terms with things but it would be best to keep them separate. Cats can and do "hunt" rabbits.
