This is Dexter!   I volunteer at an animal shelter that is small and mostly caters to cats and dogs.  Poor Dexter, or Bubbles (ICK) as they called him, was found on the streets of Manchester NH.  I think his owners "freed" him a few months after Easter.  I fell in love with him, but had 2 bunnies and a human who said 2 was enough.  After a few weeks, someone took him home, and though I was sad, I was glad he had a home.  Well, after I came back to the shelter after being away for a few weeks, Dexter/Bubbles was back!  The folks at the shelter gave him to me for nothing and I love him!  He is a "purr-bucket" and loves a head scratch.  He eats pretty much anything that you put in front of him, but has a special fondness for Spring Mix and Parsley.  He also gives bunny kisses and is very handsome!   Problem is, I have no idea what breed he is or even how to describe his color.  He’s a bigger boy, I’d say 7-8 lbs.  but has a very soft Rex-like coat.  The vets estimated his age at about 6 months old back in August.

Any guesses to his breed and how big he may end up?

I would say he’s a standard Rex due to his size. He is stunning. I have no idea what they call his coloring – it’s very striking and unusual, I’ve never seen coloring like his before. You do have to be careful too with Rexes as they have a tendency to become overweight very easily so you must be strict with his diet.

Thanks, Sarita! I thought he might be a rex, but I’ve never seen a color like his either. He’s like a Siamese cat!

He is getting pudgy alright- I only give him 1/4 cup timothy pellets and then a handful of greens. His bigger problem is laziness- he lives in an xpen and gets free run of (most of) the house for a few hours every day, but doesn’t explore much. I’m trying to bond him to my mildly hyper Dutch-Dwarf cross so maybe they can play together!

what a touching story – Dexter was fated to be with you. 🙂 he’s quite a handsome bun!

we sometimes get in extra chunky rescues that are pretty sluggish too – but often it changes within about 6 weeks. i am really hoping that the changes to his diet will have him dancing around your house soon. you might try floor time with him and see if it encourages him to play. it may be that he doesn’t even really know what to make of out time since much of his life has been in the shelter.

how is the bonding going? sometimes a more gregarious bunny can encourage more activity and lots more fun 🙂

Definitely agree with the rex breed. The color might be sable or seal point? I don’t really know sorry. One thing I would check is his paws. Due to his weight and the rex breed having thinner fur, he is more prone to sore hocks and urine scalding. So just check that his paws don’t get sore or anything.

                Glad he’s with you

Oh wow, He IS stunning! I just want to reach into the photo and pet him. If he is a standard rex, then he’ll probably be about 8 – 9 pounds. He definitely has a seal point shading, but I really have never seen that in a rex. I am so happy for both of you, sounds like you will both make each other’s lives happier!

Oh, and I wanted to add.  When it’s feeding time make him work a bit for his pellets, like scatter them around, or put them in a little lunch bag with hay (punch holes in the bag).  also, if you are able intertwine the leafy greens within the sides of the xpen, some higher for him to have to get up and reach – all of this will force him  to forage a bit more and get a little bit of exercise while he’s eating.

Thanks for the replies everyone!  I’ll defintely keep an eye on his little feet- I use a big litterbox (the xtra large cat kind) with 2-3 inches of carefresh which gets picked out frequently and he will soon be living on a carpet, so I hope to prevent any urine scald or hock sores.

I do lay on the floor with him and play for about an hour every night.  Sometimes I’ll pick him up and put him on the couch, which he seems to like.  He’ll dig at the cusions and climb all over it!  The bonding process is slow going- last night Simon (the half dwarf) was hopping about in the living room and I let Dexter out in the kitchen to see if there might be some interaction as at times they play fairly nicely.  This time, though, it culminated with a fight in Simon’s pen with a broom and a squirt bottle to break them up!  We’ll be going for a few car rides this weekend!  I’m very hopeful that the impending move will help things out.

I’ll defintely begin making Dexter work for his pellets and greens- Good advice, BinkyBunny!  The pictures of Dexter are 2 months old now, so I’ll try to get a few new shots of him up soon.

I did have another question, too- he seems to be changing color!  About 1.5months ago, most of the hair came off his face (he loved it when I gently plucked the loose hair out for him) and it has come in darker.  He also has some darker patches cropping up on his body.  Anyone have any experience/insight into this?

One of my buns has curly rex fur (she is a cross between a Dutch and a Rex, somehow ended up with curly fur), and I swear, her fur comes back differently every time she moults.  The color does not change,  but the softness and texture change a lot.

Another thing to consider: did your bunny ever live outdoors before you got him?  I know that when we get in rescues that were hutch bunnies, their fur changes a lot after they’ve been inside for a while.

Hmmm….the shelter said animal control found him on the streets, so there is no telling how long he was outside or what his living conditions were before that.  You may be right- it’s been a few months since I’ve had him, so maybe that’s why.  Thanks, I hadn’t considered that!

I think the color is called siamese even if it’s in rabbits…
