I don’t have pet insurance but I just had to say WHAT A CUTIE!!!! Whew…I had to get that out!

I don’t have insurance either.  My Brother-In-Law has two high maintenance ankle biter dogs (toy poodle and a maltese) and he has insurance for them.  He’s used it a lot too, these dogs are completely untrained and get into everything, including chocolate and my poor Father-In-Law’s hearing aids!  I do not know which company they use, but they love it.

I don’t have pet insurance either. I don’t intend to really get it either.

^^^600 a year?  wow.  i think i’d rather put that money away into savings for an all-inclusive fund for emergencies… either for myself or family or the pets.  it’s good practice to have some savings anyways… just in case.  now if i had a high-maintenance breed of dog or something… i would maybe look into it… but i think some of the companies are very limited on what vets you can go to and what it will cover. 

I had VPI last year and it was $12 per month for each of my bunnies. However, I never needed it so I don’t know how good they are. I talked to a few rescue people who said that if you are going to insure multiple bunnies, rather than insure them its better just to put the money into an emergency savings fund. Esp. with 7 bunnies, if I were to insure them ALL that would be $1000 a year, and I think that would be better off in a savings fund.

I do not have pet insurance either.  I usually pay cash for any treatment and I am prepared for the worst case scenario with a credit card that has a high limit and I have no balance on the account.  Most veterinarians also have credit cards available now too for just such emergencies. If I had the extra income though, I think I would probably get it.  Right now any amount in my pocket is what helps me get through the month.

I definitely like the emergency fund idea better….

You know, I just went to the dentist (after 2 yrs. of not going…bad…bad…) and because of my 2 yrs. of not going, I have quite a bit of work to be done, and so they told me about a “CareCredit” Card. This card can apparently be used at many healthcare places AND veterinarians, and the advantage to this card is that you can hold the balance up to 12 months and not have to pay any interest. I have just gotten this myself, so I have to disclaim that I don’t have much experience, nor do I know if a LOT of vets take this or only a select few, but if it is taken by your vet, it is nice because as long as the treatment total is over $300, then from the point you charge the treatment for 12 months you have no interest. Of course, I’m sure if you miss a payment you get hit with interest penalties…but I did see that if you carry the treatment over the 12 months interest free, the interest rate then becomes 11%.

Anyways, this might be worth investigating further for some people. I’ll let you know once I have a little more experience with it if I find it useful or not. Definitely, if you think about getting it, ask your vet first if they accept this card or else it will be a waste.

when i looked at insuring my three bunnies through vpi i want to think it was in the range of $300 to insure all three.

I’ve been doing some research about this. Most insurance wouldn’t enroll me because of my dog. He’s considered a senior now and has a cancer.
It seems and most companies only accept dogs & cats. So I’m having a real hard time that’ll enroll my buns AND my dog.

I’m sorry to hear that.  Maybe your vet can suggest one?
