okay. so Meadow’s spay was yesterday. everything went fine. she was very out of it all day yesterday. she did not go to the bathroom at all once we got home. but this morning when i woke up i noticed some pee next to her litter box. i’m guessing she didn’t trust herself to jump in yet… which is fine. a little bit later i did see her jump in and pee a little bit in her box. i still haven’t seen her eat yet… but i’m watching her very carefully.
i was given syringes with pain meds and antibiotics for 5 days. i didn’t have to give her anything yesterday because she had already been given it at the vet. i can’t give her the medicine tho. i am trying to hold her to get the syringe in her mouth and she’s freaking out. she keeps arching her back and kicking and trying to get away from me and i’m so worried she’s going to hurt her incision by all the movement and fussing she’s doing.
what should i do?
Beka – it’s really stressful when that kind of thing happens. 🙁
Hopefully if you can get the pain meds in her, she will start eating. Is she pooping yet?
Have you tried the bunny burrito method? (wrapping her tightly in a towel)
I found it sometimes works better to try and give meds at the side of the mouth instead of head-on. Sometimes you just really need to work to get the syringe in the mouth, since they will fight ya. If there is anyone around it can be helpful to have two people – one to hold the bunny the other to shoot the meds.
When I have to give meds on my own – I often like putting a towel on a table or surface that the bunny can’t easily escape from and hold them on the table tucked under an arm and close into me (kinda like a football maybe?) and then use the other hand to give the meds.
If you’re still not able to give the meds – I’d call the vet to go in so they can show you how to administer the meds and likely to also give her an assist feed since she’s still not eating on her own.
she seems to be more herself today… but she’s just not eating… i did not clean out her litterbox while she was at the vet b/c i figured i should leave it for the familiar scent. i cleaned it out a little while ago so i’d be able to see easily if she went in it. my husband gets home at 6:30 so i’m going to need him to help me with her. i’ll try wrapping her in a towel… i think i was just being too overly scared/cautious about her incision… but she needs the meds.
Let us know how it goes. I would clean the box actually – more sanitary and you will be more able to observe if she is going. I would offer her some fresh fragrant vegetables like cilantro or kale or dill to entice her. If she likes carrots, heck even offer her that. It’s not unusual for the females to take a few days to get back into the swing of things.
Healing vibes to Meadow.
*Eating and Pooping vibes from all three of us*
Keep us posted and good luck!
Make sure she’s eating & pooping! Jessi spent her first day back just laying in her litterbox, in the bunny loaf pose. She didn’t eat the next day and required force feeding & fluids. Luckily my vet told me to get her back the next day if she didn’t eat. I offered her all her favorites, raisins, cilantro, carrots. I thinkshe started eating again after just a few days.
Mike came home a little while ago and we gave her the medicine. it was much easier with him there helping me hold her. she’s active but still not eating. i’ll call the vet tomorrow if she doesn’t eat by then. thank you everyone for your warm wishes and helpful advice! this site is my bunny lifeline!
oh. another question i have… does the vet take out a lot of tissue too? Meadow was pleasantly plump before and now she looks concave. i assume she’ll fill back out…?
No, they don’t really take out any tissue – it could be that what you are noticing is that she is shaved – even on the Rexes that makes them look quite a bit different. Glad you were able to give her the meds.
good news!!! a full 36 hours after her surgery she is now eating her veggies. she had me really scared there for awhile!
even more good news… we have some fresh poop in the litterbox too! woohoooo!!!
oo I am very glad to hear she’s eating and pooping, I was starting to really worry! Hope she’ll continue to make a good recovery.
I was just going to post if she doesn’t nibble on something to call the vet as they may show you how to syringe feed, but then you the great news that she is eating and pooping. A big WHEW!!!! Now she’s on her way! I am so happy. I know this can all be so stressful.
Keep us updated!
Yippeee!!! Go Meadow, Go Meadow!! She is pulling through like a trouper!
Yay Meadow!
Yeah pooping and eating
*sigh of relief*
Good stuff Meadow!
after trick or treating tonight… when MIchael’s in bed… i’m gonna let her out to do some quiet time activites… the vet said to keep her quiet for a few days, so she should be okay now.
Jessi was on cage rest for about a week. We had to put a barrier so she couldn’t access the upper parts of her cage. She was removing that barrier after several days of spay R & R. Just double check w/ your vet b/c you don’t want her to rip her stitches.
our vet said a couple days of rest should do her fine. i was really just following her lead. the surgery was on monday. monday and tuesday she didn’t eat or poop and she was clearly out of it. on wednesday she was much more alert and kept looking at me like… "um. are you going to let me out ever again?" so like i said, late last night after trick or treating, she came out for a couple hours and just kinda chilled out with me. she was very starved for pets from me because we had had such limited contact. today she’s been out and she’s jumping all over the furniture and running around like her old self. i’m still keeping a close eye on her and trying to make sure she doesn’t over-exert herself… but she seems anxious to play.
I’m glad to hear she’s returned to her normal self! Most of the female bunnies that I have gotten spayed have also taken a couple days to get back to their normal selves. I think the surgery is mugh tougher on the females than the males.
