I read on this website as I was looking to make sure Chard was ok for Floppy to

eat since I could swear I read that it was ok…(and it is from various sites I looked)

anyway on this particular website http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm it said that

Gnaw bones can be given to them to help maintain their teeth? Kinda odd? What do

you guys think? Is this really necessary? I had never heard this before.

No – I would never give my rabbits this – it’s not natural. Rabbits don’t chew on bones. This is just an example of pet stores trying to sell us things our rabbits don’t need.

Yeh, thats definitely weird…Never read that before!
I wouldn’t give it though…I use this rule of thumb before I give my bunnies things (since there is alot of misinformation on the web)
I make sure at least two websites say it is O.K. to give and there are no websites that say it is not O.K. to give

Dr Foster & Smith should have their heads examined, lol. Rabbits should not be given gnaw bones.

Floppy would be much happier with some nice apple sticks or a willow toy.

Oh my.  Definate no. Bunnies are herbivores, not carnivores or omnivores. Not to mention there are much nicer things to chew like apple wood or willow.  If you wonder, it just really helps to think of things in this way: my rabbit is a vegan and no nuts or seeds and be careful with sugar. It is really dismaying that this info and types of "treats" are advocated and sold when clearly, they are not really good for them.  Besides, bones are comprised of calcium, too much calcium is not good for rabbits, bladder and kidney stones, bladder sludge etc. can result from this.

By the way that is an ADORABLE picture of a bunny pumpkin(s)!

Yeah I know! I stick to pellets, hay and veggies as treats– my bun loves the pineapple tablets!
I thought this was odd, especially coming from a company which is suppose to be run by vets?
I wanted to know what you guys all thought about that particular odd um…thing I found. I was
                    thinking…wow gnaw bones…are for dogs….LOL

it doesn’t seem to be any different than junk food being marketed to children.  you would hope that society would have people’s (and pet’s) best interests at heart… but it all comes down to the almighty dollar.

I also never give those to my buns either.
Typically when dogs chew on bones, they not only chew it but they also eat it too. I wouldn’t risk it with my buns. I would rather go with pine cones or apple stix.

I just wrote to them asking them not to mislead any uneducated pet owners.  This definitely has potentials of poor bunnies any hurt or even dieing (possiblity of choking on it).

Really, really old pet care books (the ones that say rabbits are easy starter pets and like to live in a wire hutch) advise giving bunnies a bone to chew on "to grind down theit teeth".  This information continues to survive, I guess.

Really, really dumb idea, but it is still out there.

Very true Beka, sadly so.  Maybe one day things will change or we can at least hope.

Gnaw bones? How strange! I am quite sure that my bunnies would not only dissaprove of a gnaw bone, but would probably start thumping frantically if I put one in their cage! My buns are very organic, my girls even turn up their noses at papaya tables (they say they don’t eat anything processed ) my boys love to eat them still though!

Hahahaha, o yes, when you get the “organic” lettuce for the buns but the cheap kind for yourself, you really are bunny whipped I just did that today! My fiance’s buns looove the papaya tablets, but mine still won’t eat them, so thats what I tell him, that those papaya tables are too “processed” for my organic buns. I mean, they DID grow up in a beach city in So Cal.

Moobunnay – my buns totally get organic everything, yet i often buy non-organic stuff for human consumption too! very spoiled bunnies we have!
mine don’t snub the papaya tablets though 😉
