Pepper is now around six months old and I respect her space and only go into her cage when she is out of it. Over the last week or so she has become incredibly messy in her cage and outside as well. It’s not really her litter habits I mean as she is not spayed yet but still pees only in her litter tray and her pellets are half in the tray and half in the cage, never outside of the cage. However, she seems to have a fun time now tipping over her food bowls, moving everything about and even dragging her litter tray to random places. Today she showed signs of what I can only call madness haha as she jumped everywhere and never slowed down for about an hour. When I try to rearrange her cage for her and tidy it up she jumps straight back in there and I can’t touch a thing. Is this hormones?? Should they not have kicked in before now? Or could this be her way of telling me she’s ill?? She seems to be happy and was a lot more playful with her toys this morning than ever before. While her cage is big enough to do a small jump in, I’ve never seen her do it before today and thought this was a big change in character.
Hi, my Shadow is 5-6 months and I came home yesterday to bunny cage carnage. It looked like a hay bale exploded. Hay everywhere, his bunny bungalow shoved to the other end of cage, toys everywhere including his water bowl. And when we let him out, he chased the cat, the dog, jumped the 6 inches from the back of the couch to the stereo cabinet, sending cds everywhere and took up residence in my fruit bowl on the hutch next to cabinet.
The only way we could get him to leave was pick up the bowl and dump him and the apple he was attached to on the sofa. Then he started to leap from one end of the couch to the other like a target in a shooting gallery, then he spent quality time in the paper recycle bin shredding the paper. When he was done running us ragged, he did non stop victory binkies through out the house.
My first bun, Fu never acted out when puberty hit. She was fearless and determined but well behaved (comparatively) LOL, good thing we love this little rodent.
Wow what a lovely rabbit you have, gorgeous colour. Well luckily , so far, Pepper hasn’t attempted to jump onto any furniture. But good to hear I’m not the only one with a daft rabbit.
That is a pretty rabbit Bunzai!
Lornatrae – I think that this behavior is both age and hormone related. She sounds like a very active and curious rabbit which is not unusual for a 6 month old rabbit.
When will you be getting her spayed?
haha my Floppster rearranges his cage every morning.
I swear its to wake me up and feed him!
I call him my Interior Designer.
haha… i feel your pain lornatrae! i’m going thru the same hormone-related craziness with my girl. at first i was scared about getting her spayed… now i’m counting down the hours. i hope the hormones clear out quickly and it resolves the behavioral issues.
and Bunzai… Shadow is so freakin’ adorable!
Thanks guys. Since that picture was taken, he has gone a lighter grey in areas, and actually had a pattern on his flanks that looked like question marks. Now he has a dark grey face, his tail is still dark grey as is his ears. He looks like he is shedding but nothing is coming off him when I brush him.
Beka27, you and me both! Even the boy friend who is very squeamish about neutering (guys! what a bunch of babies) is starting to be on board with that.
Lornatrae, daft is the word for this basket case!
Welcome Bunzai! That is one gorgeous bun you have! Ha ha I had to laugh at your member name. My black rabbit is named Bonsai
and sometimes I call him Mr. Bunzai. LOL
lorna, yep hormones, my goodness. Hopefully you can get her an appointment soon!
Six months is right about the time rabbits start to breed so I think that after she is fixed it SHOULD stop.
oh yeah what kind of bunny is that?
he is soooo adorable! I meant to mention that in my lil blurb up there.
Thanks Scarlet, I have been lurking on the sight for the past few weeks (at work, shhhhh!) your site is awesome. Bunzai was the nickname of my first bun Fu. Shadow is looking very scruffy these days with all his color changes.
Floppy, I cannot believe he is only a 3 1/2 pound dwarf, half the size of my late Fu and 3 times the trouble. But I am greatful despite the hormone kick, he is great about using his 2 litter boxes.
I’m so frightened to set a date to get Pepper spayed. She hasn’t reacted well to any of the drugs she has been given since I’ve had her. Antibiotics gave her a runny bum, VHD gave her a severe reaction that made her pull her hair out and now she looks like a burns victim. I hate to think what affect spaying might have.
Shadow appears to be a Champagne D’argent…they only come in that standard color and they are also the only known breed in that color
Aha, Bunzai surfing at work. Don’t worry you’re secret is safe with me. LOL Thank you, I think this is an awesome site too! I hope to see you around here more often!
Lorna, have you talked to your vet about your concerns and what their recommendations are? I don’t blame you for being scared to make an appointment. However, the flip side of not having it done will mean she’ll be the way she is and remain so up until adulthood at about 2-3 years old.
Lorna, I am sorry to hear Pepper has had such a hard time with meds. I don’t know about her health prolems, but I think in the long run the health problems and issues of not spaying may overide the relative short term affects of meds.
When I found my first rabbit, I knew nothing about them at all. I went on instinct and an online crash course in bunnies. Now I think I know to much of what can go wrong and I panic at every sneeze, weird binky and so on. Is your Vet a rabbit vet? My regular vet told me I had to fast the rabbit before the spay! It hit home not all vets are educated in all animals. It may not hurt to get a second opinion on all her health issues.
Thanks Hockeygurly. I googled Champagne D’argent, because I have never heard of that breed. He does match the general description, except for his size and his eye color. They are red. You don’t notice it until the light hits them, then they glow with demonic intensity. A very fancy name for beasty boy.
My boyfriend got him for me from a pet store cause he looked very distressed and had been sitting in a tiny tank for a month. The vet seemed to feel he was not bought because of his color. Not fancy enough!
