Forum DIET & CARE Gentle “beginner” veggies?

        For those who haven’t read Finn’s story, Finn has never had fresh veggies before at all until being adopted to our home.  I have been gradually offering just a touch of fresh clover sprouts and baby organic carrots…very small amounts…every other day so far and no problems.  I will be taking a trip to the market today and would love any ideas and recommendations on some great beginner veggies and greens that are extra gentle on a bunny tummy. I have read the list of bunny veggies several times, so I know what is appropriate overall, but I’m just wondering if there are some that are especially easy on tiny new tummies?  Are some off of that list better tolerated than others?

        I will probably be picking up some mild herbs like peppermint and parsley. My vet highly recommends small quantities of kale to begin because of the nutritional value, and I do understand too much of it is unhealthy.  Thanks for any hints or feedback based on your own experiences!

          I would recommend Green Lettuce, Red Leaf, or dandelion!

              When I did taste trials I put together a big plate of several veggies.  Whatever was left in the morning…well I got the idea that they weren’t faves.  My buns love parsley (curley & flat), cilantro, basil, swiss chard (to a point), green & red leaf lettuce, romaine, greens (virtually any kind…turnip, collard, etc), & kale.   During the summer we buy up all sorts of yummies at the farmer’s market.  However, when we do hit the grocery store, we go crazy in the produce section.  Good Luck & experiment.  Make a bunny smorgasboard taste platter!

                When we introduce babies to greens for the first time, we usually start with italian parsely, romaine lettuce, dandelion greens or carrot tops.  These are generally good for starting, as long as you go with small amounts.  Give a small amount of one vegetable for a couple of days, and if no reaction then you can add in another one.  Back off if you see any loose poops.

                  Can you buy dandelion green in stores? That’s my bunnies favorite but we just pick it off the ground in our backyard but when winter comes they are of course gone.

                    You can buy them here in high end markets.  They are usually pretty expensive, I only buy them occasionally.

                      Osprey – you have to hit the farmer’s markets – I get big ol bunches of dandies for $1!

                      flat leaf parsley is a great idea, dill is VERY popular at my house too. kale is especially yummy too.

                        *SOB* The farmer’s market here stops at the end of September.  Not only could I buy great stuff, they’d also give me radish and carrot tops to take home for free.  The buns will have to wait for spring now.  My local green grocery does give me carrot tops from time to time though, so it isn’t a total loss.

                          parsley, dandelions and carrot tops are what i start with. just do one at a time to watch for any upset stomach or other side effects.

                            Osprey, Gravehearted, have you tried to shop for dandelion greens at an italian market? Sometimes you can find a good deal on them there. Although if they are considered a high-end produce item (gosh that just sounds funny for something that is a weed in teh yard) it might not make any difference.

                              I get mine from the farmer’s market super cheap!  Oddly enough, I’ve also been able to get most greens pretty inexpensive from grocery stores in more "urban" areas.  Varied greens (collard, turnip, & dandelion) are a soul food staple and more common in African American Communities.  They are often fresh and priced right b/c they are more in demand and move quickly, especially around holiday seasons.

                                ScarletRose – we don’t really have a Italian Market near here. i think the farmer’s market kinda serves a similar kind of need.

                                  Oh they sure do, some ethnic areas have little shops that often carry these "special" items at a better price than the regular grocery store, but not quite as cheap as a farmers market (depends). Boy I miss farmers markets! I’m so jealous of you all!

                                    Thanks a million for sharing the gentle starter greens and veggies!  I am happy to report that Finn seems to be tolerating greens beautifully, with no stomach upset so far.

                                    I loved the idea (thanks so much) to create a little sampler platter, so I did so using kale, parsley, and mint.  Well, the little fuzzbutt devoured all of it with equal fervor!  So I have been making a simple salad of these three greens in a "medley" style all mixed together.  I offer a salad in the morning for breakfast, and in the evening I give small bite sized bits of baby organic carrot as  a little treat by hand.  So far, so good!

                                    I will gradually increase the greens and see how it goes.  We have an organically maintained yard/garden so I will pull the dandelions from there (and give it a good rinse anyhow).  We also have a farmer’s market right down the street and I’m sure if nobody has dandelion greens available off the bat, I can ask for them and someone will bring them next time.

                                    I also wondered…I saw someone here (can’t remember the post) mention rosemary for their bunny. I have TONS of fresh rosemary in my garden…is this something Finn could much on, or not just yet? Thanks again!

                                      ooo I’m glad to hear he seems to be doing well on the veggies. I’ve noticed my buns can really tell the difference from fresh organic farmer’s market produce from the regular supermarket stuff. I think it’s likely because it’s so much fresher. 🙂 Dandelion greens are a favorite with my buns, especially the red ones which aren’t as common.

                                      I’ve never fed rosemary to my bunnies – but I’ve heard it’s ok as a treat. I’m not sure about how gentle it is to be hones, but I’d likely avoid it for now.
