  Hey everyone. I am new to the site and new to the world of house bunnies. I recently rescued an English angora from someone who had to get rid of him. Henri is my first house bunny and he is a very good boy. I attached some pictures of him so you can see him. I do have a question too. I also have cats. I know bunnies are vegetarians, but it doesn’t seem that Henri knows that. I caught him the other day eating out of the cat’s bowls so I had to put them on a table so Henri can’t get to them. He seems to look around the house constantly for food. If I didn’t know any better I would think the poor guy was starving but he gets fed his pellets every morning, he has hay all day long, and he gets fresh greens and a treat at night. Am I missing something?

  Bunnies are grazers, and they will spend a large portion of their day eating, and begging for food if a human is around. Wool producing breeds like Angoras do require more protein in their diets, I wonder if the cat food is satisfying that for him?

  He’s so pretty! You might want to feed him small amounts of alfalfa hay as well since he has long hair – that could help with the protein problem too. Of course still keep him on the unlimited grass hay.

  The peelet food that he gets garauntees it is at least 17% protein and could be up to 23%. This is within the range that the house rabbit society suggests, do you think he needs more? I give him about a third of a cup of pellets because this is what someone from the society recommended, do you think he needs more? He weighs about five pounds and he is seven months old if that makes any difference.

  Welcome Angorgrl! My that picture of your rabbit is just gorgeous, he looks like a cute fuzzy abominable snowman. I am not too familiar with long haired breeds but it sounds like his diet is adequeate. It’s a good thing you put the kitty food up as it can be bad for a bunny and imabalance their GI tract. You can try some alfalfa, but not too much as it may make him gain too much weight.

  I have a Henri with an “i” as well! It sounds like you are taking excellent care of Henri – rabbits are naturally very curious, so he is probably just hunting all around for pretty much anything to play with, pull at, or explore, and not necessarily scavenging for food. That is so nice of you to rescue Henri – he is just fantastic looking I like that third picture of him, it looks like he has a little mustache!

  He’s a young bunny too and is still growing and it sounds like his diet is fine but it wouldn’t hurt to give him more pellets. The House Rabbit Society recommends 1/2 cup per six pounds up to a year old and I read on Carrot Cafe 1/4 to 1/2 cup high-fiber, low-fat per 6 pounds of body weight for long haired rabbits so I would increase his pellets.

  Oh my goodness, that second pic of him is the cutest thing. He is just a big ball of hair, and it looks like he has no eyes. It is so good that your rabbit gets along with your cats. I would be to scared to put my buns together with my cat. He is an old cat and doesn’t hunt but I am afraid he would take a swipe at them. I have noticed how many people have buns named Henri.

  After researching through google, There are some definite things that seem unique to angoras. High protein, which you know about, but just make sure high fiber too! Looks like Wool block is an obviously common problem.
  
  One thing I also found out is those who do spin their bunnies fur do have to offer more calories during shearing since a rabbit burns more calories to adjust to less fur and keep warm.

  They get along great actually. I have four cats. They are all about a year old and get along wonderfully with eachother. The first day, there was a little hissing from my girl Trinity and my scaredy cat Bentley was scared of him and hid for a few days. After that though, there haven’t been any problems at all. The people that had Henri before I got him had four cats too so he is not scared of the cats at all. He actually plays chase games with Trinity now. (they take turns being the chaser) it is so cute!
