Hello to All!
I have a 2 year old Holland Lop that is going through a very heavy shed. I have notice that since he has been shedding (like the past week and a half) he has been very grumpy. Do you think this has any connection or am I just imagining things? Thanks for any advice you can provide.
Has their been any changes in your daily schedule? New hours of leaving and coming, different feeding time for bun, new room mate, etc? Bunnies don’t generally adapt to change right away. If you can think of any changes that may have occurred, this may be it.
Welcome! As Rachel pointed out, any changes in the normal routine can make a bunny upset. Have you groomed him at all to help him rid himself of the fur? I think it may help and a site you may want to check out is the "Language of Logomorphs" that gives you clues as to body language and what it means in bunny-speak.

Does he groom himself a lot? Is his bunny poo strung together like pearls with fur? If so, you may want to consider supplementing his diet with papaya tablets to help, if a bunny ingests too much fur, it can cause an impaction.
I don’t think there have been many significant changes in his routine. He gets brushed about 2 times a week and eats about two of the Oxbow papaya tablets a day. I have not noticed an excess in hair in his droppings. I just have no idea….he is neutered too.
I keep trying to order the papaya tablets and bb is out. Both times she she has been out. I can’t wait to try them with my boys.
hmm, it sounds like he’s going ok physically – well like people bunnies can certainly be moody. Hope he’ll be back to his hoppy self soon.
my bunny looooooves those papaya tablets, and i love that they are a healthier alternative,
rather than those yogurt drops!
I often wonder if the changes of season affects our pets – days getting shorter or longer, getting cooler or warmer, etc. Perhaps too the shed is making him uncomfortable – I might be a little grumpy too if I was loosing my fur and having to be brushed more often than usual.
My Pepper is terribly moody when she’s in a heavy shed. We joke that she has PMS – Pre-Moulting Syndrone. Not sure whether it’s itchy or something, or just that she knows she looks funny, but she’s definitely more anti-social and skittish at that time.
Thats what I wondering…He is very "patchy" looking and does hate to be brushed. He is just going to have to deal with it I guess. I feel better knowing someone elses bunny gets moody during a shed. Even though he is a boy I thought that it was similar to a female human having PMS!! Thought it was pretty funny 🙂
Wow you do a great job with grooming and well hair isn’t backed up in him either. I know my Bonsai goes into a funk when the weather turns cold. He jsut lays there all forlorn in the litterbox in a big dramatic depression.
A few of my bunnies are shedding right now as well, while mine don’t seem to get grumpy, they DO seem to be more mischievious at this time. Maybe since bunnies don’t like change so much they have trouble dealing with the changing of the seasons.
Coney has been shedding for a while now and I have not noticed connor doing it yet. Coney is multi toned. He is normally a rich coffee color and where he is losing his fur, it is very dark.
Sorry about that!!! I’m getting a new shipment in of Papaya in one week. If you want to order it, email me first to let me know you are going to order and I’ll figure out some kind of discount for your patience. I have made it so you can order now though even though we are out, and I’ll just send them out next Thursday if you want. (if you haven’t already ordered them from someplace else.)
I know I have read somewhere about bunny attitude changes during molts. I just can’t for the life of me remember where. Mabye there is a hormone that makes them molt and that same one can make them active, grumpy etc. I will need to research this to figure out where I read this.
Well he is molting for sure…I have vacuumed the towel in his cage like twice a day for the past week (and he isn’t even in there very much). There are tumbleweeds of bunny hair floating across every surface in my house. I have given him two large boxes with newspaper in them to play with and he seems to be enjoying that. He just seems very grumpy :-/
O yes, the Tumbleweeds of bunny fur! We’ve got those as well, it seems like any time one of my bunnies stops shedding, another one starts!
Tumbleweeds……yep we’ve got those buggers here too! lol! Since we put in wood flooring, I’ve seen the tumbleweeds rollling around! lol! Its good though cuz they gather themselves in a ball and all I do is pick up the ‘poof’ and its all fine! lol!
When I comb Harley, I use a fine comb dipped in warm water and it catches the hair for me. Hes a mini rex with really, soft fur and if I dont it really fluffs all over. I just use the comb and keep dipping it in the water and it works well. Or what I do sometimes is wet your hands and when your petting him you can give them a massage and the water on your hands catches alot. Rub your hands together and it will roll off for you. Harley is getting groomed tomorrow cuz he has major BUTT fluff going on! lol!
(hugs))
