        Hi guys,

Just thought I would update everyone in here as I had started a few other threads and now I’m confused so I’m sure you are too – sorry

Well I took Honey to the vet last night for a check up and to see that she was doing ok etc and because of the runs she has had.

When I got there she was in the carry crate so I explain that she was a dwarf lop, black, about 4mths old etc etc.

I was asked to take her out of the crate and the vet just said “My god – she is big!!!” I was like “oh no, is she obese? She’s obese isn’t she?” LOL. He just said no that she wasn’t obese but was a big girl – nice way to say fat if you ask me LOL

He asked if she had grown much since I got her and I said yes she was the size of her head when we got her now she is huge – he laughed.

I said “she isn’t a dwarf is she?” and he just laughed and said wellll……

Anyway, he took her temp etc, it was a little high, said she has a little infection and gave her some antibiotics and I gave her another dose this morning.

He said that the diarrhoea would prob be from to many pellets are they are high in protein or something and to not give her many anymore, give her more hay and vegies from now on as it is what is probably making her sick.

I give her the Lucerne Peters pellets and Lucerne hay. I knew she ate heaps but I wasn’t sure if it was to much as all I had heard was give her unlimited hay and pellets so that’s what I did?

He said green vegies will be good for her.

        What do you think?

Hey Alibear! Well it sounds like your vet had a funny bone, that’s always good. : ) Please forgive my amnesia but Honey is 6 months old? Since the lucerne is alfalfa he might just be right about it being part of the cause of Honeys bunny poo prob. Is there another hay available to you other than the lucerne?

She is only about 4 mths old now – I thought the vegies were for 6mths and above, hmmm I just don’t know.

I just want to do what is right for her 🙁

I will go to the pet store at lunch time and I’m sure there is other kinds of hay, but what kind should I get?

I would hold off on the veggies, she’s still a bit young yet. Hmm, is there anywhere I can look online at the brands available to you in Oz? Probably anything that isn’t lucerne, I know timothy is what I would really hope you could find, but am not sure if you grow it there. What is the name of a pet food store chain there? Hmm, I’m going to see about trying to find something since our other Aussie reisdent isn’t here. : (

Ummmm I can’t find anything on line either with brands 🙁

If you would hold off on the vegies what should I do in the mean time – surely hay isn’t enough, but the pellets are making her sick?

Hmm, I was reading the Australian Companion Rabbit Society web site and they said that customs prevents the imporation of timothy hay so that is why you don’t have it. But oat hay is the closest thing you have available there and to basically use any type of grass hay. Well your vet recommended that you cut back on the pellets and if you switch the hay you may be OK. The Aussie Rabbit web site also said to contact them if you have trouble finding the right hay. So you may want to try that rout.

                  I’m sorry I am trying to help. : (

No sorry, thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I will try and find somewhere that supplies good Timothy hay here and that should be good for her.

I put hay in her bed area (to also keep her warm) and she seems to pooped alot in there, is that ok for her to have the hay to eat in there or does it need to be in a stand / bowl type thing?

You’re welcome! I just wish that there was more I could do. Definately try to find oat hay since that is what is available to you. : ) The hay in the litterbox is just fine, in fact we recommend it! My bunnies seem to prefer the hay in the litterbox over in the basket, but you might want to give her the option of some in a basket too. Bunnies like to eat when they are doing their business for some reason. Odd, huh?

                        THank you.

I have one more question – I’m sorry.

If I take away the lucerne hay and give the oat hay, is it ok do you think to still give the lucerene pellets. They say Peters in Australia is a good brand and that is what I give her but it is the lucerene one. They also have a mix one but that has all different stuff in it?

Hello, try just giving 1/4 cup of pellets per day. Since she was on the young bunny diet of unlimited pellets, cutting them back to just 1/4 cup should help with her diet. Usually I have always heard unlimited hay and pellets for babies, but it sounds like you have an extra well appetited bunny on your hands! I think that the oat hay with 1/4 cup pellets should be good – this is actually the same diet my bunnies are on!

From what my vet explained to me….veggies can be ok prior to 6 mos., but really only if your vet gives you the a ok.  I’m guessing that since the vet said give her veggies, he’s giving you the ok.  Just wait for the diarrhea to clear up, then try to introduce a little bit at a time.

I have a dwarf and she got really chunky from not enough veggies and too many pellets.  I now give her no more than a 1/4 cup a day in the am.   She gets a huge bunny salad in the evening and hay all day long.  I take the pellets out when they get their salad.  I needed to force Leo to eat his veggies instead of pellets all the time.

                            Hope that helps!

No worries! Like Moobunnay said, I think it is OK to cut back on pellets but use the same ones for now, in fact it is done sometimes even when a rabbit is young. It could also be why his poo isn’t so great right now. Oh, and the oat hay sounds great! You may eventually want to try and find some pellets that are not made from lucerne hay, if possible. What is in the one with all the junk in it? Are you talking about seeds, corn and ickies for bunnies?

Like Skunk said, if the vet gave you the OK try the more tolerated veggies like parsely and see if it causes any bad reaction like diarrhea, if not then try another one like a carrot. Please let us know how it goes!
