My bunny, Lola, used to have a problem with her butt. Her poops would collect and they were soft so they would stick. We got it treated but I am noticing that in a very little ring-like area around her tail, she is a little bit bald and the hair that is there is very slightly mothy and yellow. I am not sure what to do because when I bathe her, it just never dries like the rest of her fluff. I am trying to watch how she uses the litterbox and it looks like she goes number 1 ok but i dont understand why this is happening. Is there an at home remedy besides monitoring and further potty training her? How can i get the yellow color out, its not a lot but she is a mostly white bun? I have also been noticing that when i give her food, she will nip at it a little and go away for about 20 minutes. then she comes back to eat. Should I be worried?

Oh, and i have been noticing but not taking too seriously that the inner sides of her front paws are feeling weird. As if she licks them and the hair dries up. then when i tried to touch them to see what was going on, she squirmed each time. What could that be? just grooming?

welcome to binky bunny lygray 🙂

It sounds like Lola may be having a problem with urine scald, which can be caused by a number of things, including urinary tract problems. It is very important to get her into a vet right away, since it can be painful and is a symptom of a larger issue.

Do you have a bunny savvy vet nearby? It’s very important to take rabbits to a vet that sees a lot of bunnies and knows how to give them proper care.

Here’s two lists of Texas vets.

            http://www.rabbit.org/vets/vets_texas.html
            http://www.ntrs.org/vet.htm

Bunnies are natural grazers when it comes to eating, so it’s pretty common for them to graze throughout the day.

Did you doctor recommend you bathe Lola?  It can be highly stressful for bunnies, so often it’s best to just spot clean them or just soak their butt in a shallow tray of water.

Please keep us updated on how she’s doing.

I am trying to get her into a vet today. I dont know yet if this guy is rabbit savvy, He told us to wash her butt and put baby powder on it before so i think he has seen a few rabbits.

Hello – Can you give us some information on what your bunny eats, as well as what kind of cage your bunny is in? It sounds like your bunny may be sitting or standing in her urine a lot. What kind of litter box does she have?

I would recommend filling up her litterbox with a lot of hay, that way when she pees, it will go down to the bottom of the box and she will be protected from it. Also, if she has a wire bottomed cage, put in a rug or something like that, because she may be standing in her box all the time because her feet hurt. Finally, if you can put a towel or blanket in her cage to give her something soft to stand on that will help as well, and change it often so that it does not also get pee on it.

Well, she is a free bunny but very rarely does she go into her cage. It has a plastic tub with metal bars on top and we use the cotton bedding from the stores. Her litterbox has the cotton as well but i am trying out a litter from the store and so far she is skeptic about it. I just came back from the vet, he is a bunny savvy vet so that is good. He said that there is nothing wrong with her, she just needs a little safflower oil in her food. She is a very healthy little bun, and so is Cinnabon. She looks happy and energetic and is eating correctly.

Hello! She must be happy to be a free bun

If the issues don’t clear up, maybe look into adjusting her diet some based on the House Rabbit Society recommendations (listed on this site, or at http://www.rabbit.org). Did the vet look at her feet at all? Do they still seem sore?

I love the name Cinnabon! I have a Vanilla Bean myself, the rest of my bunnies got human names but Nilla Bean was so teeny and cute she fit the name perfectly.

I’d like to chip in a little here. Make sure that if you do use baby power (this would be for a dry bath) that it is 100% pure corn starch as any that contains talc is caustic for bunnies, work it into the fur and let it sit, gently brush stroke with a soft brush to help work the gloppy stuff out. Pat with a towel to get it out the best that you can and voila, you’re done. As for the urine scald, I second checking with a vet to make sure there are no urinary or incontinence problems. Poor baby, hope she feels better soon!

I don’t mean to second guess your vet – but the fact that he recommended using baby powder on her scald and adding safflower oil to her food has me a bit concerned as to how rabbit savvy he truly is. 🙁

The corn starch baby powder I am guessing the vet recommended for the sludge butt not the urine burn lygray? gravehearted is that an outdated thing now?

Well, she had but sludge about seven months ago and he gave us a specific powder to use, not just baby powder. Just out of curiousity, why is safflower not a good choice? I just want the best for my buns and i want all the help i can get. So far Lola is very playful and bouncy, she is being a little cleaner down there. Cinnabon is not trying to pick at her anymore. They seem to be very close but not enough yet to leave them completely alone together.

oo ok lygray – i thought it was just *regular* baby powder he wanted you to use on Lola, which had me concerned.

In regards to the sunflower oil – I have never heard of a vet recommending adding it to a rabbit’s diet nor could I find anything online about it being beneficial to rabbits. Scarlet_Rose have you heard of it being used for health reasons?

Hi.. just wanted to add my two pence! I had a bunny who suffered with a sticky butt… I discovered though my vet that I was giving him too much protein, ie. pellets. I also cut out veg for a day (just fed hay and blackberry leaves) and reintroduced the veg one thing at a time to see if anything upset him! He also had problems with urine scold when he was older (he was all white so it really noticed) and I found that a litter box with newspaper on the bottom, then something to absorb the pee like wood pellets (no pine though) and then a thick layer of hay really helped.
I also noticed that you said your bunnies front paws felt weird… like dried up hair? I have a bunny who suffers with recurrent respiratory infections (under control right now fortunatly) and the first thing I ever notice is that his front paws are dried and matted, where he is trying to clean his nose. You need to get her looked at by a vet who really knows their stuff.. it maybe a respiratory infection (could be why she isn’t grooming herself as well?) and if it is left untreated may develop in to “snuffles”- pneumonia, which can be harder to treat. I’d be inclined to get a second opion. It never hurts! Hope she gets back to normal soon!

P.S. what was your vets rationale for the oil.. I’ve never heard of that either. I’d be interested to know. I’ve given my bunnies ground linseeds for skin problems before.. for the omega-3 oil.

                                  BTW cute bunny!

Hello lovely ladies gravehearted and moobunnay (members too)! Actually I have heard of oil being recommended for shedding and/or dry skin. However, the choice of a nut or seed oil has me wondering because they are for one, not good for a bunny to begin with in their wholel form of nuts and seeds (digestive upset and imapction) they are very high in fat and protein which we know is not good for a bunny. Safflower and especially sunflower oil is often added to stock feed (i.e. cattle going to market). As for recommending it due to urine scald and/or poopy butt, one would think it would cause poopy butt to become worse as too much protein can cause this malady as well as an overproduction of cecotropes, not to mention making them overweight. I for one would not be administering my bunnies oil of any sort except maybe topically on their footpads and pure vitamin E at that. I would recommend not giving your bunny more oil (maybe the vet thought for hairballs???), you do not want any diarrhea in a bunny and oil can act as a laxative.

Oh, ok, well, I will stop the oil and only give it to her like once a week. He recommended it just as was said, for dry skin and an allergic reation to dust. He told me to put about half a teaspoon on her greens or pellets. He thinks that she may be having an allergic reaction to dust or something so that might be why she is grooming her face a lot with her paws, hence the paw problem. I have blocked the area below my bed now so maybe there was too much dust there. I am interested in the respiratory problems that was brought up. What else did you notice on them or their behavior? Maybe I can try to see if Lola has similar characteristics. Very rarely she will do like a sneeze but that about once every three of four months.

Before when she had the sticky butt problem, my vet, a different vet we no longer like, told us that it was because of the pellets and the fact that Alfalfa was too heavy for her tummy. We now only stick to timothy hay and I have been hunting for pellets without alfalfa which is very hard to find, i only found one brand so far. We still occasionally give her the regular pellets with alfalfa but not often. Most of their food consists of just regular fresh timothy hay.

                                        Scarlet_Rose , you rock 😉

Lygray, thanks for more background! I hope you don’t take offense to my questioning the vet, i just get overly worried about bunnies sometimes :-/
The brand of pellets I really prefer are oxbow, but looking on the site it doesn’t list anyone near your area that carries it. I’m not normally a fan of kaytee brand, but they also make a timothy based rabbit pellet that is more widely available.
