My mom came into some money and offered to help me have Vicki spayed – finally! – so I called the vet to have arrangements made and… what a nightmare!

Our ESTIMATES for the procedures are a pre-op exam for $82 and $337 for the spay!

We’ll have no choice but to manage with this, but I never expected anything THAT hefty! That’s upwards of $400 – or a month of pay to a part time worker (as I will finally be soon).

Has anybody else had to pay this much to have their bunny spayed or neutered? I’m shocked. I was thinking maybe $200 if I was unlucky for all of it. This is a bit disheartening to me.

yikes. I paid my vet 20$ neuter my male, he quoted the price at 32$ but gave me a discount because I have so many doggies and seems I’m always in there. He doesn’t spay female bunnies tho so I spent a day or two calling vets when it came time for my female to be altered. The highest price I received was a little over two hundred dollars including all anesthetic fees and surgery fees they like to tack on. I finally found one that  only charged me 95$ for everything. They did a great job, her little scar healed nicely and she recovered rapidly, eating again later that night. How much is it to spay a cat at that clinic? That sounds really excessive. What does the pre-op include? 85 seems a lot for a little blood work. Is there a bunny foster home near you? You could see which vet they recommend.

Spays definitely are more expensive than neuters.  I don’t know about Canadian prices – but here in the US I’ve heard of rates anywhere from $100 – $300 and of course there are some rare clinics that offer even lower rates.  $300 US is considerable more than $300 Canadian.

The other thing is that you want to ensure to chose a vet who does a number of success spays every year,  and many vets just don’t have the experience.

You might consider calling the Ontario Rabbit Education group to see if they know of any lower cost spay options.  http://www.ontariorabbits.org/index.html

here is their list of vets that might help you in researching  http://www.ontariorabbits.org/health/healthvets.htm

              Hello Sevyn,

As Gravehearted mentioned, definitely try to get in touch with a rescue organization, they will always know of the lower cost options! I had two neuters done for 85 each. The last spay I got was for Grace – but since she is a special needs bunny I went to a more expensive very well known bunny vet because I was very nervous about the whole thing, and it did cost me about $256 (but $56 was for the exam). If you can, try expanding your vet search area a bit, maybe if you go a little further away you can find something a little bit more affordable.

when i spayed Flops, the whole thing cost about $250 too   i don’t know if the HRS is just US based, but my chapter of the HRS does low cost spays and neuters for around $75.  thats a lot better…..

but usually, that IS how much it costs

Yep, here is central Texas, the one vet that does it in Waco (and he’s so old I’ve decided against using him) is $375 dollars for a spay.

I talked to the rabbit rescues in Dallas and their vet will do it for $150, but it will require 2 trips to Dallas, basically 2 days off work. So between gas and missed time, it will work out the same, but I think Pringles will be in better hands.

Must be why they always tell you the unfixed rabbits are boys! regardless of what they really are!

Hey there kralspace – if it would help you out to have a Pringles baby sitter in Dallas, let me know!

Next time you buy/adopt a rabbit maybe you can just drive down to whatever US state is south of you and adopt a spayed/neutered one there
