  My Ms. Pringles, the diva has decided to redocorate the condo. I had read a thread here earlier about someone’s bunny had started digging out the litter box and I was counting my lucky stars because my 2 keep a very, very tidy cage, see the first photo.
  
  As if Pringles had read that topic, she pulled out everybit of hay in the litter box, and spend a lot of time arranging it on the second floor of the condo, making sure it was an even layer and not knocking any of it down to the first. It was hilarious watching her diligently push and pull, stamp and stomp to get it just right. Then 2 of the cats climbed up and all three settled down in the hay for a nap. By the time I found the camera, the cats had split, but you can see how proud Pringles is of her new flooring.
  
  At first I thought it was about digging down to the wood pellets, but her only interest was pulling the hay out. If she wants a nice deep layer on that floor, it’s alright with me I guess, can you guys see any reason why I shouldn’t let her have it? (as if she’d let it stay in the litter box in any event…lol)

  Awe, well you’re lucky she’s not diggin out all her litter pellets too! But to answer your question, no there is nothing wrong with it being on the floor. Some bunnies will end up losing a bit of their litterbox habits as they seem to like to then poop and pee more all over the hay, so if you find she does that then of course you may want to prevent it from happening for two reasons: Your own convenience and not wasting hay that she should otherwise be eating. But otherwise, not a probem. Bailey loved to dig her box – can’t do it as much now that she is weaker, and she’s such a poo bomber all over her pen regardless that I didn’t mind and it gave her some extra exercise. I just make sure she has a hay rack of fresh hay so she can munch on that.
  
  I also love to watch it a bunny digging in their box – so intent, with such purpose, and with lops, it is extra cute as their little ears flop around while they are doing it.

  thanks binkybunny, I feel better now. She seems to be doing her business in a large littler box on the first floor. I fill the litter boxes with fresh coastal bermuda hay I buy by the bale and put their timothy and alfalfa in a basket so I can kinda keep track on how much they’re eating. I have 2 bales of coastal I bought for $5 each so that’s pretty cheap.

  Just one thing about the hay, it can get soaked with water or urine and drench bunny fur and cause a few health issues. Like BB said, keep an eye on her litterbox habits though, it should be OK but I am thinking that over time her litterbox habits may wane. How long has she been doing this?

  She did it last night. I’ve been watching and they’ve been peeing and pooping in the litterbox which now just has newspaper and pellets. After I read your posts, I sifted through the hay floor and it’s dry and clean. Since I’m home for the holiday, I think I’ll let her enjoy it and see if I can move it back into the box once the novelty’s worn off. I can’t wait to see what her next project will be….lol

  You have quite the ambitious bunny over there! My bunnies are diggers, but definitely not neat diggers, and definitely not diggers with a GOAL in mind like making new flooring in their apartment. maybe you should give her a pile of tiles and put her in the bathroom and see if she remodels the place…

  That’s a great idea MooBunny, except Pringles should be replacing all the sheetrock she’s destroyed in the room I’m currently remodeling. If I don’t get it taped and floated pretty soon, she’s going to have the whole wall down.

  Sounds like my Rascal! She does the same thing pulling out the hay from her box,sometimes some pellets come out with it when shes mad,but usually picking out the hay. Odd though she has two litter boxes now on her bottom floor (i got tired of cleaning up the territorial poo n pee lol) she leaves the one alone. Hmmm…

  Some bunnies just like to lay in the hay. I for one use wadded up newspaper for litter. I have to shred it finely though or Nel’s desire to shred it further will kick in. if it’s already shredded then it can be ignored, and left as litter. Newspaper is decently absorbent, and of course a good use of that daily paper when you’re done with it, if you don’t have a local recycling pick up.

  hhhmmmm….after a few days the novelty of the hay floor wore off and she let me put the hay back in the litter box. I cleaned it out yesterday and put the usual many layers of newspaper, a thick layer of hay and left the pellets out.
  
  I sat down to the computer to work and Pringles jumped in the box and went to town working on it and the second picture shows her new creation….lol. She is a very precise bunny. Just to be mean, I kinda spread the hay out and she immediately put it back…

  I wish my bunny would focus on something for more than 15 seconds! Ha. It seems like the only time he does that is if he’s destroying something he shouldn’t!

  O my goodness – that must be the smartest bunny ever! The most my bunnies do is put their toys away at the end of the night. Intelligent? Yes, maybe it would be if they didn’t consider putting the toys in the WATER dish putting them away
