We used to have a female bunny “Dusty” and she would do that! Harley is another story with doing that! Dusty would let you put a tiny pillow we had on top of her four paws and leave it there like she was bench pressing! OMg…….it was funny! It can be a bit nerve wracking to see them in that trance, thats for sure! I know what you mean!
I wonder why bunnys do that when their on their backs? Maybe to play dead, gosh! I know the first time Harley did his “roadkill” position, gezzzzzz I almost died! He just spawled out……rolled on his back…….and they back over again……..plop!!!! I thought he had a heart attack! I went running to him and he looked at me like I had three heads! These furbutts, I’ll tell ya ! lol!

Harleysmom. When bunnies do it on their own – flop down and do that play dead mode it’s a form of pure relaxation which means they feel very safe. When you “put a bunny in a trance” by putting them on their backs and stroking their head, this a way to play dead and then escape when their predator feels relaxed enough to loosen it’s grip. They “seem” like they are in a trance and relaxed, but studies show they are alert and it’s actually rather stressful. I just recently learned this myself, and now only trance them when absolutely necessary like clipping nails. (i work as fast as possible) You can also read about the trance state and what it really means and what a rabbit really experiences on page 179 of “Why Does My Rabbit….” by Anne McBride.
