Is this posssible?  My dog has been having runny nose for the last 2 1/2 weeks.  It started 2 weeks after I got my bunny.  Two medications later and he is on a third one, the vet thinks he is allergic to my rabbit.  I’m so sad and hurt because some of the things my bf said.  Such " You have to put Rascal before the rabbit." and the likes.  I love them both just as much, but it makes me cry that I could lose my bun.  Is this really possible?

At the moment, my parents had agreed to take my bun for a couple of weeks to test it out and to see if my dog gets better. But he is also taking this Clamavox-so if he does get better, we will take the rabbit back and if he gets sick again, I have to find my Scamp a new home and it is making me feel horrible. Not mention that it would be so stressing for him to live with my parents and then possibly a new home.

On the other hand, my dog is wheezing, congested and is sometimes lethargic. I don’t know what to do

I mean the first week, my dog had a fever too so they think it is URI. They gave him some myox-something and a week later still has a fever.  So they give him Baytril for a week and he is now eating, more energetic, no fever, but still has runny nose, congestion.  Today he starts Clamavox for a week, also without my bun.  What puzzles me is that he had a fever-so how is it allergies?  Also, it’s a new vet(emergency spur of the moment) so I’m a little doubtful because they never even examine him. We call that his meds are gone, but he still has a runny nose and they say to come in. So we come in and they just hand us new pills and we are done. I didn’t even have to take my dog with me.  My dog’s old vet is an hour away (by my parent’s house). Should I get a second opinion? I dunno what to do

OHHHH. I’m so sorry. I know this must be tearing you up. I so hope your dog is not allergic, and that whatever it is, it is something easy to treat.

I have never heard of a dog being allergic to rabbits, but then again, I’m not an expert on dogs.  But they can be allergic to human dander, mites, dust, etc too. so it does sound reasonable that they could be allergic to rabbits. I mean if they can be allergic to dust, why not rabbits?

When I tried to do a search on google, I didn’t come up with anything specific, but I did find an article about the kinds of allergies dogs typically suffer from and what the symptoms are. http://ezinearticles.com/?Dealing-with-Dog-Allergies&id=188923

According to this article, food allergies can cause runny nose, but dander and such cause a different type of symptom. But again, this is just a quick search, and I am not a vet.

I so hope that the experiment of your bunny being out of the house and then coming back will show that something else is going on, not a rabbit allergy. Maybe someone else who knows more about dogs will be able to help you.out. Or check out a dog forum. But be sure to keep us updated as this would be of interest to anyone who is both a rabbit and dog lover.

I FORGOT TO ADD;  Yes, I think you should definitely get a second opinion.  I mean you are talking about having to rehome your sweet bunny, and I am sure that would be soo hard on you.  So, by all means, go to the vet you trust before making such a heartbreaking decision.

My dog has allergies, and my bunny is one of them… usually he doesn’t have trouble unless he sniffs too close and inhales my bun’s fur. He’s mostly an “outdoor dog,” though. The bunny gets the house, the dog gets the yard.

Definately get a second opinion as it sounds like something else is going on with your dog and he needs an actual examination and maybe even a test or two. Handing over pills is not acceptable to me and I would totally scoff and walk out of that place to tell you the truth. But that is just a personal choice.
Allergies are up in Colorado (Yep, I’m here too!) and with the rain, mold may be an issue as well and causing some trouble. However, that being said, your dog could be having trouble with the hay your bunny eats and not necessarily the bunny itself. My Daffodil has some allergies to the hay if it is a little too dusty so I be sure to shake it out a little and they bunnies also have their own air purfier by their cage too. Does anyone in your abode smoke? That could be it too. As well as depending on where you live, the dust being blown all over could be a problem as well, especially if there is a construction site nearby. Are you in a new place? Then there could be something in the carpet and they may need to be cleaned. Anyway, just some ideas.

Hi everyone-next week my dog wil be going to another vet. When I posted yesterday, I said I was going to take my bun to my parents house, but I never did. He is still here, but the good news is my dog seems to be getting better. Not as much discharge. After some research, a lot of talking and reasoning, my bf and I both highly doubt he is allergic to the rabbit. I didn’t mean to paint him as such a bad guy, although I was quite mad at him for saying such things. I think emotions ran high and he still helps me take care of the rabbit.

My dog and my bun lay together and he never sneezes so that’s one reason I don’t think he is allergic. No rashes, itching, etc. Plus he had a fever. I think it was just an unfortunate timing. We have lived in this apartment for 2 years now and had never shown any signs of allergies ever, but I guess he could develop it. I really think he got this infection from a new dog beach that just opened. He went there 8 days straight the week just before he started his symptoms. He loves the water and I’ve seen many dogs defecatingand urinating in the water. We haven’t been there since then. It was a great idea until the water gets to dirty, I guess.

Ok, so my dog seems to be getting better and my bun is still around. Both will be checked out by a vet next week. I’ll keep you guys updated. Thanks for the help/suggestions guys, I just wanted to get things off of my chest.

Well, that’s a relief for the moment. I didn’t think anything poorly about what you said about your boyfriends comments, Sounds like a normal discussion when tensions are high.

I sure am hoping everything will work out so both animals can stay. I’ll be looking out for updates.

Hey no prob ScampiBunny, by all means that’s what the board is for, to help with bunnies and bunny conflict, what a great place the “Lounge” is to do that. Heck, we know your guy isn’t “bad” but like you said, emotions do run high, especially when it is very personal and we certainly understand that.
A lot of times it is a process of elimation to figure out what is going on by just thinking things out and just keep taking a good look and examining at what has changed or what was different that happened/that you did etc. I’m glad to hear that they are going to another vet too. Let us know how it goes!
