Growing up my stepmom was involved in an animal shelter with cats and dogs only. We had a number of animals from cats, dogs, lizards, turtles, birds, etc. We had a bun once, he was BIG and had lop ears. I think he was dumped at the shelter and my sucker of a stepmom brought him home. lol We didnt keep him long because he ate through cords and everything else. He was so large (at least 10lb) and with dogs it just didnt work. So we gave him to one of my teachers who had rabbits.

Fast forward from then around age 13 to now (28) my first rabbit was 4 yrs ago. I have horrible allergies and have asthma attacks from cats and dogs (growing up I got used to our own without issue). I begged my then boyfreind (now husband) for some kinda furry animal. lol I was fascinated with rabbits and we got Carrera as a baby and from the first day she owned our home.

Now we have three buns and working in a shelter I can play with more buns that arent mine but I can spoil them as I wish. We are planning to adopt a fourth bun because Carrera is obviously unhappy being alone seeing Pookie and Cooper playing together.

We dont have children yet but even if we do rabbits have become such a huge part of our life I dont think I could ever give them up. Dont take me wrong, kids or no kids my buns would never be removed from my home for a baby. We would just learn to adapt. They are so comical and they love to show off. My husband swears cats arent as fun. lol Even he is whipped by all the fur in our house.

Seeing where you are now with your own buns, would you ever live without a fuzzy bun in your home? God forbid something happen to the bun(s) you have now, would you get more?

I never fought with my family before my bun — he can cause some stress when he gets destructive, but I could NEVER give him up. They’d have to kick me out before they kick my bun out! I love my bun to death and I think I will be a lifetime bunny mommy.

Me too, I know I will always have bunnies. I doubt I will ever have three again, unless I get a trio that get along. But I will always have no less than two.

I started out a bit like you Hedi. I wanted somethin’ but dogs were too much at the time, and my husband is allergic to cats (except strangely enough, he’s barely allergic to this abandoned cat we are taking care of at the moment) and after contemplating moving into the scaley category (a lizard), I started to think fuzzy. I weighed my options. Steve wasn’t allergic to rabbits, and so as I started researching, and made up my mind. Poofy tails and whiskers was the route I took. I soon became a volunteer with a local rescue, and that’s when it all took off. I wanted to know more, and more.    And now I"m permanently hooked on bunnies.

I am scarey allergic to cats and dogs. If I am around them long enough I can adapt but I cant stay long at any friends house who has a cat or dog because I start to wheeze.

Strange that I am not allergic to my buns. I have never been in contact with a lion head or any of the long hairs buns so that could be different.

I think because rabbits are just so unique and have so much character that you cant help but love them once you are around them. I would have an entire house full if I could. Once we move out to the country I plan to have a small rescue/sanctuary for those buns that have no where to go. Working at the shelter even the most abused buns come around with some love and understanding. And those are the ones who have so much personality but you have to give it time to come out.

same here, I can’t imagine a house without bunnies. I’ve always had 2 cats, one older, one younger and they always moved with us, they adjusted just like we did when the babies came along, well, maybe I didn’t go hide in the clothes hamper when the baby cried, but it was tempting sometimes. I even had a horse for 32 years. I would no more get rid of my 4 legged babies than my own.

When my son was 12 he was allergy tested, and was allergic to many things, among them cats. The wise doctor asked my son which of his allergies were worth putting up with and he said HIS CAT….lol. So we worked to reduce the dander, kept them out of his bedroom at night, etc. I glad he learned at a younger age that some things are worth figuring out how to make it work.

I had to pretty much quit reading the pet section on Craig’s list because of all the ads starting out……we have to find our beloved, devoted, treasured pet a new forever home, etc. because we found we have allergies, baby, whatever and we don’t have time for them with the baby coming… Just how treasured were these poor pets anyhow.

My very first pet was a bunny, when I was 5. I’ve always had bunnies, with an exception of my college years and then when I first moved out to SF. I love bunnies and couldn’t imagine my life without them. I imagine I’ll always be a bunny person 🙂
