› Forum › THE LOUNGE › why are so many people racist?
i live in an apartment complex on the corner of a street and they had recently (more like a year ago) made a ceter divider thing for people to make a left turn into to wait for the trafic on the other end of the street. well one dayi was driving and i wanted to make a left turn and there was no one going on the lane closest to me but there were people on the other lane going the oposite way as the lane closest to me and so i decided to turn into the center divider to wait of trafic to clear…. well just as i turn in (doing nothing wrong, i didnt even trun too far) some girl that looks like she was only 15-16 driving and her extreamly overweight mom in the pasenger seat had honked at me!!!! i got really startled (a good reason not to honk for no reason when others are driving near by). well trafic was clear and that lady and her daughter was wating at the light so i pulled up to them and asked them why the hell did they honk at me, i didnt do anthing wrong. well she said "yo almost hit us, learn how to drive" then i said "your daughter is learning how to drive, why dont you teach her that it is ok to male a left turn into a centerdivider to wait for traffic. and not to honk at people like that." then she said out of no where, "why dont you people go back to your own country?" ok ok….. this probably doesnt look as weird as you are reading this but the key thing that i lkeft out that makes this unbelieveable is the fact that i am asian (we are pretty bad drivers but its a stereotype…. its not really cool to use it bluntly like that…. and i was not doing anything wrong…… if i was id admit falt) and she and her daughter were spanards….. (accent and everything……). seriously, it is people like that that make this country a bad place to live in. you think that people shoul;dnt be racist becuase our society is really mixed (being as we are in california) so you think that we have a little better understanding of everyone…. but out of pure anger after hearing that i just yelled back and said "why dont you go back to YOUR own country, i was $#^$%^ born here!" the nerve…….. i am so pissed……
Bad day. Wow I am so sorry to hear about that. Tension is high in everyone and they often look to others to vent off and blame for the troubles and ills this country is going through and they just pick something, anything and use that whether it be a racial slur or outward charateristic like being obese or wear glasses. By no means is it a reflection upon you and well if it makes you feel better we all are not "originally" from here anyway and it would serve this country better if people would just realize that they are not making this a better place to live, but making it more hostile for everyone. O.K. I’m off my soap box.
I know what you mean, being an asian female we do get made fun of alot haha.
For some reason this made me think of the Mexican president proposing open borders between the US and Mexico….oh dear…
xliddobunnyx, I am sooo sorry. What a ignorant jerks those people are, and what a nice way for her to set an example for her daughter- so her daughter can grow up to be just like her. Like Scarlet said, people, when they are angry, just try to hit you where they think it will hurt you most. The best revenge is not even let them phase you. Just to think…ech..what an idiot, take a deep breath, and hope that racist people of the world don’t procreate too much.
Though, especially in traffic, which can be high tension just because of the dangers, sometimes it’s good to let off some steam just to get it out!. I know a few good profanities and "bird" watching can sometimes hit the spot (as long as the person doesn’t look like a complete gun toting psycho.
I always feel like I am so lucky to be in a place that is full of diversity. I wouldn’t have it any other way. But I am always shocked when someone says something racist, and they’re saying it to me as if it’s not big thing, that just because I am white, I would some how be on board with their point of view. And though people spewing out such ignorance so openly doesn’t happen all that often, when it does, it comes from people I don’t know very well. (Well they wouldn’t be my friends if they were like that). I am always dumbfounded that there are still people like this out there, especially around here!
I have a funny twist to the whole racist /prejudice thing. Many years ago, by best friend and I, were walking in not the greatest place in town, late at night (we just left a bar), and we could not find a cab. So we kept trying to get to a busier street, well it was scary, and these guys out of no where drove by and yelled obscenities at us, and called us "white" #$##%. My friend, whose Asian, could have cared less about all the obscenities. She screamed back. "I"M NOT WHITE!!" She was sooo offended by that. I laughed so hard. I did get to learn some colorful "Mandarin" that night though.
Another funny thing that happened is when my nephews, who are Asian/Caucasian mix, went back to spend time in Taiwan for 3 months, and the pre-schoolers noticed he was different and started chanting "foreigner". Later when he came home, and his little brother made him mad, he called his little brother a "foreigner". My brother said he couldn’t help but laugh.
Well, xliddobunnyx. I am so sorry about what happened! Big dummies! Brush them off and the don’t let them get to you any longer.
I live about 10 minutes from the Mexican border, so we get all kinds of cars from Tijuana driving here. I don’t know what it is, but when they come across, it’s like a lot of them forget road etiquette … I’m not racist (I’m actually mostly Hispanic myself.. and quite liberal!), but I too often find myself shouting "Go back to Mexico!!!" every time I get cut off! 😡
The road rage will make you crazy.

HAHAHA ok well there is an example of when "Go back to Mexico" is not a racist comment, because if you’re living in San Diego that’s probably a statement of literal intent……and again….open borders with Mexico? uh no.
Oh that reminds me, there is an excellent comedy play that just finished at Ivar called N*gger W*tback Ch*nk. It is hilarious play about ethnic/racial tolerance. I highly recommend you guys see it when it plays in your area. I’ve seen it twice already. Even if you think you aren’t biased, you will probably be inspired by this play. It’s playing in Orange Aug. 24th but they are touring all over the US. Maybe I will go see it a third time!
Especially if you are black, latino, or asian it will probably be even funnier as you will identify with one of the guys in the play of that ethnicity.
sigh…. i was pretty mad but i am not one of those road raged women. it would actually look funny if i wasnt. i think i am shorter than poopy. =P i have nothing against mexicans or any other race. i actually have a hispanic friend that hates that about people who are hispanic/mexican. seriously…. i understand we should help proverty flourishing countries but by golly…. we cant help everyone…. sometimes we have to just say “sorry, we’re busy with out own” (too bad that is not the case right now where we have to set our country aside to help another…) california should be its own country =P (as my bf likes to say) i remember i went to the east coast…. OMG!!!!!!!!!!! i went to virginia and this one korean girl yelled at me for being on the right side of the stairs…… well actually i was going down the stairs at the same time as she and her grandmother was and she was right next to her grandmother (i love the elderly and respect them and all but seriously… her grandmother didnt even say anythign) and as we go down the stairs, i was right in front of her and stood in one place so she can go around and she yelled at me “MOVE!” O.O my bf was pissed. (note i stood sideways so her grandmother could get by easier…..) so my bf started to yell at her and she didnt even look back…. she just keeped on going. we didnt want to do anything but that girl was acting like the world was hers so my bf just had to say something to her. he told her if you were a great grand daughter she would have found an elevator for her….. why the hell was she going up the stairs? it was a really huge stair case… it turned 3 times…..(many koreans over there dont like other asians becuase many of them believe that they are their own separate from asian. they really give other asians the mean look…. i had it the whole time i was over there. one of my friends asked this girl if she was asian and you know what she said? “no, i am korean, cant you tell?” oh and while we were driving from virginia we were driving on the freeway to the speed of traffic which was 80 mph. a lady comes from behind, (note that the freeway was pretty empty…. and it had 6 lanes….) really really fast and honks us like crazy for about 2 minutes….. and then decides to go around us and flip us off as she is speeding away…… seriously….. you couldnt have just slowed down a tad bit? or go around us from the start instead of hitting ur break and honking at us? sigh… people….. boy i have lots of stories…. pretty surprised i am not racist myself. =P then again if i was i wouldnt have very many friends because most my friends are mixed….. well i do feel better living here than the east coast…. there are some that are not as racist but there are that are some really really racist people over there. over here, many have to hide it. i didnt know but there are many “skin h***” people/groups out here (sorry for using that term) but i have a coworker that used to date a guy liek that and she said that every week he would go to one of those meetings. (she used to be racist too but i showed her the light!!!! ::holy light shining down on xliddobunnyx:: lol jk. her bf took all her money and ran. so ever since then she has rethought about her viewpoint. especially since her ex-bf keeped on saying “he is our kind, he wouldn’t hurt us….” that guy later broke into her house and took everything and ran. now that really proves that race does not really matter. adn besides, if the US wasnt so integrated we woulnt have all these wonderful different foods to eat all the time. =P seriously, i cant live in asia where there isnt any italian or mexican food. ::drools::
Haha, yeah, it’s not true racism when they actually have Mexican plates I suppose, lmao
Hmm… I don’t think skin head is really a derogatory phrase ::shrug::
I have no need to be racist either way. I look like a white girl, but I have a Spanish last name. I am really a mutt… something like Spanish/Scottish/American Indian/Italian/French/English and I think there’s more!
Hey everyone, just wanted to let you know that this discussion is okay, but just be consciences and careful with this subject as we are all a diverse group here. Don’t say anything that you wouldn’t want someone to say about you or your race. One way to check that is…replace your race with the race you are speaking of and see if you would be offended by that.
digxmexnow – wow. sometimes i wish i was a big mix. =) i always thought that would be really kewl. as for me, i am chinese/vietnamese and thats as long as it gets. – -” ::sigh::
BinkyBunny – understood. besides, i was the one that posted it and i think it goes for all racist people for all races!!! i just want to tell em to open their eyes. by golly!!!
i think sterotypes are funny but i dont think that anyone should use them to categorize anyone and hate them. everyone makes mistakes sometimes. besides, you are not going to get anywhere faster by speeding, so ill see you at the stop sign. =P
I am being very careful of my wording! I’ve taken all into consideration, but I definitely appreciate it, Jen!
xliddobunnyx – You’re absolutely right. Racism can come from all races. Your original post was nothing to be concerned about. And my last comments were not geared at anyone in particular. Just a friendly reminder as the discussion progresses.
On my thoughts as to why people are racist – I believe it is one of or combination of ignorance, fear, fragile ego and jerkyness. And some use it as a tool to gain power, and maintain power.
Bottomline for me: Jerky is Jerky. Ignorance is Ignorance. Those are negative qualities that don’t attach themselves to a person’s exterior. Take away what’s on the outside and the inside is what stands out.
I’m sorry that lady and her daughter were so hateful to you, it was totally uncalled for. I drive 30 miles on the interstate twice everyday and it’s unbelievable how hurried, mean and dangerous the traffic has become. Is it racist to be against rude, self-asborbed people? I don’t care what race, color, ethic group, if someone drives like it’s a video game, nearly making a right hand turn at 80 mph across 4 lanes to get to an exit, I’m steamed at the lives they’ve put at risk.
If there are no cars behind me for half a mile and some nut comes blaring up to cut in front of me causing me to hit the brakes, again to make an exit, I get steamed! True, I drive a 1985 ford pu, but I’m driving the same speed as everyone else, and could probably outrun any of these idiots, but people just will NOT be seen driving behind an old truck….lol
I’ve wondered if the generation starting to drive now and grew up playing video games need to be de-programed, because that what a lot of it seems. No turn signals, cutting cars off, swinging back and forth through heavy traffic as if they don’t even realize there are humans in the other cars, who might just make an unexpected move also. Like it’s their private freeway. Coupled with the outrageous driving by people totally distracted talking on their phones, I give thanks when I get to work in one piece.
I would love to have a sign on my bumper that would light up and say HANG UP AND DRIVE!!!
sorry to have rambled on. One last thought, if that woman was teaching a teen ager how to drive, I might have to cut her the littlest bit of slack. Not that she doesn’t deserve it and is not setting a good example for her daughter, but having taught 3 teens how to drive on the interstate, I just have flashbacks of making them pull over and crawling out to kiss the ground….lol
as a Harry Potter fan, when faced with a really spectacular idiot, I just smile, while, out of sight, pointing with my middle digit ‘wand’ and uttering the spell "Driver Stupidious!" at least I get it out of my system
I’m sorry that they were so arrogant to you. It’s really kind of frustrating that this kind of thing happens when there’s really no difference to behold
Unfortunately, being a rather nightmarish mix of Dutch-Jamaican myself, I’ve heard my fair share of derogatory racial slurs. However, I grew up in an almost entirely white community and I’ve never had any serious problems. Being the zen-like person I try to believe I am, I usually ignore any racial comments I hear and brush them off because I’ve come to realize skin colour means nothing Yelling something racist is just as shallow and empty as saying something sexist or stereotyped, and people like that just aren’t worth your time anyways!
Anyways, I apologize about my mini rant. Sorry about your particularly rotten luck with those people, I hope you don’t have to deal with that kind of thing often Just keep your cool and realize someone who’s not willing to look past your race isn’t worth listening to in the first place.
kralspace – i am not sure if she was teaching her daughter but i understand from her daughter’s point of view that she was scared but at the same time….. why the hell is her daughter speeding in front of a school? (i live right across the street from one and last time i checked it was supposed to be 25 mph. i was driving at 5-10 mph because there were no cars in the lane closest to me so i was just waiting for her) i guess it is somewhat acceptable for her daughter but i think she should teach her daughter to keep from getting into an accident by slowing down instead of going at the same speed and honking hoping an accident wouldnt happen….. oh well, i am just dissapointed in the mother but oh well, i will take everyones advice and just ignore it. and hopefully it will all vanish in the future. =)
Hello everybody I’m new and being ‘half-asian’ I just felt the urge to comment. I was born in a navy base and raised for 11 years of my life in the Philippines and my dad is Irish/american (such a weird combo :/). I came here when I was 12. My dad was in the navy, met my mom and I came along. I’m now 22 with two younger siblings and the ‘rents are still together. Anyways I just wanted to say how I felt so out of place here. Many thought I was italian or mexican for some reason, I guess I kind of look like it. I didn’t really feel like I belong anywhere. I have first hand experiences with mean asians in this side of the america (i’m in Ohio). Most are snobs, and I’m always eager to meet new people and I’m never rude about it, but they seem to have their own group-even other filipinos are mean. Once in a while there are still some people who will be rude, but i just brush it off. I remember when we were younger, we would all go grocery shopping and peoplewould be looking at us weird. My dad would then get pissed off and want to leave-I never understood why until I got older.
scampibunny – dont worry, some day, race will no longer matter in this world. =) btw, ur bunny looks cute in ur little picture. =)
I hadn’t even seen a filipino until I moved to San Diego! 😡
As someone else said it doesn’t matter what you look like, what you wear, what you listen to, what you do, what sexual preference you have, where you’re from…there will always be someone with a narrow mind who is that insecure with themselves they delight in casting their bigoted, racist, homophophic judgmental arrus. They’re nowt more than a bully. And as much as these people deserve a good hard implement inserted rear-endedly, laugh at their attempts to make you feel inferior and know you are far better a person.
Several years ago my best mate and I were in a weird bar place in West Virginia with a friend we were staying there with. Now our mate is certainly noticeable, (very large, always in black, a huge muff of jet black hair, howard jones tattooed all over her bits and bobs, and always wearing one contact lens in black and white, and the other in red and black). A group of lads came over and started chatting, it started getting a bit heated and we assumed the “boys” problem was their fellow american and her uniqueness. How wrong we were, as we heard her calming things down to their rantings about “colonnial f*cks”…turns out they misheard us being from britain and thought British Columbia. flippin’ cheek! 🙂
