Okay, I called around and think I’ve found the right vet for Sable.  His first appointment is in another week.  Is there anything I should know about taking a bunny to the vet?  Our cat was easy, we just wrapped her in a blanket and I held her while hubby did the driving.  Once at the vets she was alwasy easy to handle.

We do have a small bunny carrier already and I have a blankie that can go with him.  We will have to drive about 45 minutes to get there.  Any advice would be great.

        Thanks!

Hi Anitastark I took Boo for his first vet visit yesterday and it went ok. He was comfy in his carrier and liked having the towel in there with him so the blankie is a great idea. I also put a bit of hay in for him to chew. He was a little nervous in the waiting room because there was a boisterous dog that kept barking. so I would be aware of that just so you can keep him calm. I also braught a handful of raisins to hold his attention when the vet was checking him it stopped him freaking out he wasn’t sure of being so high up and he was anxious because he had no where to hide or run to it also stopped him moving all over the table. I hope all goes well with the vet ,sable is just so lovely he is very handsome . I would also get up and let him out early and place the carrier in the room and let him hop in and out so he can get used to it and mark it, i dunno if this would make him comfier.

Thanks Tallulu.  Great advice about letting him get used to the carrier before hand.  I didn’t even think of it.  Maybe I’ll put it in with him in his playpen for a few days before hand.  His appointment is first thing in the morning that day so I hope there won’t be any dogs to cope with.  The people at the vet’s office sounded like they were very considerate of bunnies’ feelings.  Sable doesn’t get raisins yet, I think I’ll pick up some fresh romaine or carrots the day before to take along.

He’s still a cuddle bunny, so I’m hoping if that hasn’t changed at this age then the surgery might only make him even more huggable.  He is a little darling.

What  kind of raisins do you give Boo?

            Thanks again!

I remember Kahlua’s and Chloe’s first vet viisit.  I think I was more nervous than they were!  I have one of those pet carriers that opens from the top instead of the side.  The top has a little door that slides open, so I can put treats in there and it make it easier to properly scoop them out. That way I can always look and see if they are all right.  Placing a blankie or old rug in there is also good for them. And I always put in a fresh piece of romaine lettuce.

In the waiting area, I always hold the cage on my lap and talk to them to calm the down because there is always some commotion going on.  In the exam room, I take them out of the cage and hold them and talk to them until the vet arrives.

Trust me, it’s not as traumatic as you think it will be.

You’ve gotten some great advice, and I don’t have anything more to add except for well-wishes.

Let us know it goes and when his scheduled surgery date is.   For the future, here is a great link for pre & post surgery care.
