ok everyone. . .I need more ideas for toys. Still trying to work on the chewing problem with fujoe and I want more of a variaty of toys in the apartment. He’ll love stuff for a while, and then will just hop away, uninterested. So, this is what I got. . .

        1. Phone book

        2. magazine

        3. paperback novel

        4. about 6 cardboard tunnel boxes

        5. baby keys

        6. plastic baby teething letters (A-Z)

        7. cat toys (plastic balls with a bell inside)

        8. Wooden toys out of pine, poplar and oak that my boyfriend (fujoe’s daddy) made him

        9. 6 cardboard tape middles

        10. 2 stuffed animals (he licks the bunny one all of the time, it’s really cute

        11. Rope

        12. 2 grass baskets/matts thing

So that’s a lot of stuff to have just lying around. He wasn’t too thrilled about the Bordom Box thing.. He ate the stuff and that was it. I’m looking for inexpensive toys to get him to keep him occupied. He doesn’t like paper towel rolls. . .and I think that he’s getting board of this stuff too…. so HELP!

This is kind of like the teething letters, but my bun loves to chew on those plastic key rings for babies. He’ll throw them all around and chew, it’s very cute

              Some ideas:

              • Since he’s a digger, what about filling a box with shredded paper.Basically cut holes in either side, and almost fill it – that way it may encouirage him to dig through this to get to the other side.  Or you can bury a raisin or two somewhere in the shredded paper and let him try to find it.
              • Sometimes bunnies with a lot of energy move towels or little blankets around, reorganizing the wrinkles.  But if Fujoe likes to eat it instead then it wouldn’t be safe for him
              • Many bunnies like tunnels and there is a cheap version you can get at Home Depot for about $8 bucks.  They are concrete pouring tubes – about 5 feet long and about 7″ in diameter.
              • Also, since he likes to destroy things, maybe placement of some of those things you already have is key. – like block his normal path with a phonebook or ??,  So for example if he loves to run between the couch and an end table, place the wood, or book there.   Bunnies don’t like things in their normal path and will usually try to destroy it first before finding another path.

Let us know if any of that worked.

i have just created a new cage toy for dougal. i’ve tied sisal rope to the inside pulp basket used in a hanging basket on four sides and hung it from one of his cage levels and filled it with hay. i’m not sure whether he will use it and makes cage ugly but he did hope in it earlier and i had to laugh at him swinging around. i’m hoping it will create some amusement for him as my bun hates the usual toilet rolls and petshop toys as well.

i really should take a pic of cage and send in – it’s a general disaster area of late night ‘moo ideas!

for my own amusement i have tucked a postcard in his cage that he can’t reach showing a cow doing a poo on a rabbit. it gives me the power to forgive him for eating my desk this week!

Oh, yes, you definitely need to get a picture of him sitting in that basket.   Now that would be somethin!

What a great idea though for a toy test.    Try adding treats tucked inside the sides of the basket and see if that adds even more excitement.   I love it!!!

It gives me some ideas….hmmmmm…..The toy test  section (for home-made toys) really needs updating!
The "Boredom Buster" box has had it’s time in the sun, and now it’s getting boring.

                    *waves paw*

I just adopted my bun this past weekend, and so far her favorite toy is a small wicker basket that I threaded a willow twig through as a sort of handle. She loves to toss it around. Close second is that sisal carrot rattle that everyone seems to have.

Since she’s a digger, I plan to try the diggy-box and the phone-book ones as well.

I second that Welcome!   Congrats on your new bunny!  What fun.    How old is she?

She sounds like she’s spunky!   Let us know how she takes to the box.

I love how in your profile you says 40 and your first bunny.   I didn’t get bunnies until I was in my 30’s.  It’s funny how rabbits are considered a child’s pet, but they are really better suited for adults. (my opinion)

Annabelle Lee is about a year old – she came to my local shelter from Chicago Animal Care & Control and the vet who spayed her guestimated her at about 4 months old in late January.  Since my birthday is 9/27, I have decreed that we will share a birthday!

I have always had severe allergies to cats & dogs, and had resigned myself to a life of hamsters.  But I met some wonderful Florida Whites while working the Oklahoma Renfaire a few years ago, and was delighted to learn that I am not allergic to these wonderful critters. Hours of cuddling after I got scratched and no reaction – I told people that he scratch-tested me!

I had to wait almost 2 years to make it happen though.  As an admin, I have been in and out of work since 9/11/01, and I knew from reading the newsgroups that I needed to have a stable income before I could take on the responsibility.  It took longer than I expected, but in late August I moved to a pet-freindly building.  I was already approved by the shelter, so all I had to do was unpack and then go meet some bunnies.  I specifically asked for an older or larger more laid-back animal who would be a bit more forgiving as I learned.  Annabelle Lee won me over when she stretched out to chill on the floor of the pen within 10 minutes!

We’re still getting to know each other – I can really only pet her when I have food in my hand, and she doesn’t seem to like her head touched at all.  But she’s laid back, curious, and very smart.  She has figured out that veggies come from the fridge, so when I run out while hand-feeding her she runs over to the fridge and stands up in front of it as if to say "Mom – they’re in HERE!".  The diggy-box occupied her for a total of 45 seconds.  She jumped in, sat there for a bit, picked the dried fruit right out, then hopped out and ignored the box from then on – except to head-butt it aside when it was in the way of her running laps.

Tonight I introduced her to the rest of the apartment, and she did her first binky!  I’m sooo excited!

Wendyzski –  I wish more people were like you, taking your time and making sure they are prepared. That would reduce shelter population.

Toys are such the biggest mystery when it comes to bunnies.   Some love to explore, some love to dig, or toss, or chew on a phone book, or rearrange a blanket.

So keep testing things out, and let us know what ends up holding her interest.

My bunny spends HOURS rearranging the items in her cage. I bought one of those grass mat baskets from the Christmas Tree shop that’s untreated.  She chews it, lays in it, moves it around, hides things in it. It’s a great thing for bunnies to eliminate their boredom.  The kabobs that hang from the cage are wonderful too.  You can put all kinds of things on that.

Don’t underestimate cardboard box cities!!!! Different sizes, with holes cut out for doors and escape traps can entertain a bun forever.  Good luck!

Try a cat treat ball its a small ball with holes in which i put miah’s food in she then rolls it all around the flat. Its great not only does she love playing with it even when its empty but its an imaginative way to feed her!! She also acts like a hoover eating all the crumbs – amazing!

Another thing we have tried lately is a cuddly toy which me and my partner sleep with every night to get pour scent on she then loves carrying it around and licking it – its the cutest thing

Bobey Miah – Great ideas!  I’ll have to add that to the Toy Test Page – which soooo needs updating.

And the sleeping with the cuddly toy –  That actually gives me an idea to help shy bunnies bond with their owners…hmm.  Wonder if that would work.  I use that similar method when trying to bond two bunnies.  I put a toy…aka: stunt double, in with the other rabbit and then switch.  Great idea.

Sounds so cute that she carries it around.  Awwww she loves you too!

My baby has taken to loving baskets, I had one laying around that was part of my Halloween costume, (little red ridinghood lol) and she loves to try to climb in it and pushing it around. And of course the classic cardboard box!

I like to put a little bit of hay or even a little Celery in there as a treat.

Baskets (untreated) are great chew toys!   I used to love baskets to put things in – like magaziines, mail, I even had a rattan weaved typed of hope chest.   Well, I found out how much they actually LOVE baskets, and even though I would get a bunch of baskets just for the bunnies, it still was more enticing for them to chew on my baskets.    So needless to say, I don’t have baskets for myself anymore.

I have baskets and boxes with newspaper but have to lay them on the side or she will not play with them. She also likes her plastic slinky, and of course she is an avid rearranger so lots of fleece blankets I got at thrift stores that are washable. Occasionally she will chase the ball with the bell in it, and I hung a large bird bell from the top of her cage and she seems to like pushing her hiding box into it to make it ring. I have wooden birdsafe toys hanging from the side of her cage but have not noticed she is intersted in that at all.

She also likes to play chase the parrot,…but I decided that very soon it would be parrot chase the bunny and bunny would ultimately not like the end results so now when the birds are out the rabbit is not and visa versa.

She loves hiding under my fleece house dress so I find if I hang old towels where she can hide under them that keeps her amused…but frankly, nothing seems to keep her amused long….she goes from one thing to another. I guess her favorite toy is me and playing “escape into the forbidden zone” game.

I don’t know yet if I have officially welcomed you.   IF not.  WELCOME  FOXFLOWER!!

It looks like your big heart has opened to a  real character of a bunny.  Keeping some bunnies, usually smart active ones, entertained can be a real challenge.  I usually have a whole bunch of different things, but I don’t put them all out at once.  I cycle them.

Check out the ToyTest section on this site for some homemade toy ideas, and we’ll be keeping that updated more often now.
