I actually went to a shelter and pulled two death row bunnies this morning. They are sitting in my living room now. They will be transferred to another transporter later today, and finally into foster care sometime tonight. The shelter was not yet open to the public when I was there, so I had to go in through the entrance where they allow people to bring in strays. I was there less than 30 minutes, and two cats were dumped in the time I was there. Even in the public area I could hear the kittens crying in the back. I can't imagine what it must be like to work there.
Here are the two lucky bunnies that I pulled on Saturday. The holland lop is called Mia and the tiny gray girl is Shelley.
When I went to do the pickup, the tech actually pulled the wrong bunny for one of them. Instead of the lop, they brought out a polish dwarf, who looked just like my little Deanna. It was very very hard watching them take him back to his cage so that they could get the right one. He's on death row too, just no room for him :-{
They are adorable!
I hear a lot of people say it would be hard to work in a shelter. I would love to work in a rabbit rescue but we have none in this area. When I started volunteering at the HS I thought it would be hard. I am so allergic to cats and dogs that I (sounds bad i know) tend to ignore them. I am there during the day when they are closed to clean bun cages and socialize them so I dont have contact with those other animals.
I adore my rabbits and sad when they leave but of course thrilled they have a new home. We are not a no kill shelter unless horribly sick. We dont kill due to room. Fergie has been with us for 3 months now and I think she will be there forever to be honest. I would take them all home if I could but I surprisingly was able to separate myself. I spoil them, buy/make them toys, buy them greens, etc. So I do believe the buns feel they are loved. They each get 30min-1hr out at least 4 times a week.
I found out the cats do not get any time out at all and the dogs only on a volunteer basis which is so sad. Our rabbits get better treatment than the other animals do.
