I’m going away for three weeks next year to get married and a family member is going to be looking after my two bunnies at their home. I’m worried that when we come back our bunnies won’t remember us. Would being back in their home environment and around us remind them, or will it be a case of starting all over agin with them?

I’ve never been away for quite that long, but I was gone for a little over a week visiting family while Tossu was still quite young. My boyfriend took care of him. When I got back, I was a bit worried Tossu would be wary of me or would forget me, but he ran up to he door right when I got home and hounded me for the rest of the evening, climbing in my lap and sitting on my shoulder whenever I sat down. He clearly knew exactly who I was, and was happy to see me!

If it was over three to four months, I would have assumed they would forget you. But three weeks…I don’t think so. They are likely to remember you by your unique scent.

They won’t forget you in 3 weeks. Your scent, your voices. It will all be familiar and un-scary. They have a very keen sense of smell. As Avantika says, they will identify you by your scent.

They won’t forget you. I’ve been gone for 3 months at a time, and mine always remembered me. Although, they were so angry with me for leaving, I started to wish they had forgotten me…

They will remember you, but they will also make you pay. Better have those craisins ready when you get back!

Yep, as Hazels says, there is the risk of the dreaded bunny pout when you come back. You’re likely to have to bribe yourself back into their favor =)

Really ?!?!? Buns get all grumpy with their hoomin for leaving them behind ??!!! That’s so adorable.

How long does it take for them to forget their hoomin completely? I want to know this, so that whenever I have to go somewhere for a long time in near future, I will try my best to come back before that timeframe.

I don’t know if any memory studies have been done on bunnies. However, animals can have long memories. For example they believe pigeons may remember an individual human face for many many years. Some of these studies even used feral pigeons. They remember individuals who they mistrust and ones who they know bring food ect. The people can even try and disguise themselves and the pigeons know.

I think many animals have good long term memory, helps with survival. Now trust issues are a whole different thing. If gone long enough you may have to build your relationship up I would assume, but most likely any weird behavior is due to a trust issue more than a I don’t know who you are issue.
