        Hi guys!

My bunny Lucky has always had some problems with getting his back paws dirty. Especially in his… excrement. I have a showmanship fair coming up and no matter how many times I clean his bottom, it still gets dirty. We have tried a drop-bottom cage and a litter box. I’m worried that the erosion caused by the urine could damage his feet.

        Any tips for cleaner feet?

        Megan

          Why don’t drop boxes work?

When you say he gets his back paws dirty with excrement, do you mean that he has sticky poop? Or excess cecals that he steps on?

A bunny peeing on himself may have a UTI. A bunny with sticky poop/excess cecals often eats too little hay.

His poop is normal and solid and his he doesn’t pee on himself but he just seems to get pee on him a lot. Either that, or he can’t reach his backside in order to clean himself properly. A lot of times I clean him with paper towels and a little bit of water. I’m just worried about his feet being damaged and him being in pain. But I never thought of a UTI. Thanks for the tip! I will definitely look into it!

The drop boxes used to hurt his feet a little. Now he has adjusted but they still don’t seem to help.

Some bunnies aren’t good at cleaning their rear ends. It may be due to obesity or old age (arthritic joints) or it may just be how that individual bunny is. If he gets lots of urine on his hind legs, you can give him butt baths. You probably don’t have to use any shampoo, just luke-warm water. Pat him down after with f ex a micro-fiber towel so he doesn’t go with a moist butt all day long. If his skin seems irritated, you can use a barrier cream, f ex an unscented bees-wax cream. A cream like that will soothe any irritation+ help keep the urine from reaching the skin.
